Description

Bit frothy white head, slowly retreating over bit hazy, heavily carbonated golden beer. Wey-ish, grains, sweet pale malts, but also yeast (fairly heavily) & spices, including coriander. Bitterish for a second, then sweet & grainy (especially milkripe wheat). Again, if more mutely, spicy yeast. Really very fizzy carbonation. Slick, light to medium bodied. Sweetish, overcarbonated.... pfff... where is it better than ordinary Belgian pilsener?

Oliver Tsjon, the self-proclaimed “godfather of Ghent nightlife”, developed this beer together with some friends in order to profit by the current beer revolution – but has at the same time stated that this beer needed to be kept deliberately as simple as possible (without “blabla”, to quote the man himself); feels like some form of 'antisnobbery' to me, not uncommon in traditional Belgium, and a missed opportunity to create something innovative. Anyway, apparently the marketing of Tsjon’s beer is outsourced to Néobulles, a Walloon drinks company that also imports the Austrian trappist beers into Belgium, and has this “friends’ beer” brewed at Géants (Brasserie des Légendes). Stubby bottle – the 33 cl one not intended for sharing with friends, contrary to the larger version – from the Delhaize supermarket in Lokeren. Thick and very frothy, off-white, cobweb-lacing head sustained by very fierce and very champagne-like sparkling swirling through an initially clear pale yellow golden beer, turning into a misty, more straw blonde hue with the sediment added. Aroma of sweetbread, flour, dried banana, camomile, bread crumbs, dusty old coriander seed, green apple, chewing gum, plaster, soap, freshly cut grass. Sweetish onset, quite pronounced banana ester but green apple and pear notes too, lively carbonation but nowhere harshly stinging so fit for the intended style, minerally accents throughout; slick, somewhat oily mouthfeel, lean cereally and white-bready malt sweetish body with flour-like aspects and dull coriander seed spiciness and soapiness, but also evolving into quite a long, spicy, floral hop bitterness that lasts for a while – at least a bit longer than average in Belgian top-fermented blonde. Plaster- and bubblegum-like aspects in the finish as well. Not as bad as feared, to be honest, this beer is technically well-made and has more hop bitterness to it than I was expecting, enhancing complexity and drinkability a bit. I’d happily drink this again if I encounter it in Ghent nightlife – at least this is highly preferable over the mass-produced lager or other industrial macro brews one tends to encounter in that kind of environment.

jako belgijsko pivo sa 8.5% alk. Jako dobro pivo, puno okusa i kompleksnosti. Alkohol se jako malo osjeti.

Hazy blond colour, white foam. Yeasty, notes of citrus, quiet dull. Nothing special, lovely bottle but the beer isn't very nice.

Hazy light brown colour with stable head. Aroma is a litte sour as is the taste. There's an element of spocy yeast and sone dried fruits too. The sharness is a negative. The beer needs more sweetness and more body.

Bottle at home. The colour is clear brown with a beige head. Aroma of raisins, red currants, leather and some caramel. The flavour mirrors the aroma. Has a slick mouth feel, medium body and a light bitterness. A malty and decent ale.
