Description
Artzner craft beer has a very long history. It dates back over two centuries. In 1882 to be exact, Pierre Hoeffel founded brewery Perle in Schiltigheim. In 1919: Charles Kleinknecht, brewing engineer, took over the brewery and in 1930, a new brewery was built. Just before the Second World War, production reached 300,000 hectoliters. In 1971, the brewery was closed and the buildings were demolished in the 1980s.

In 2009, Christian Artzner, great-great-grandson of the founder, paid his greatest tribute to this beer by bringing it back to life. In 2015, the Perle brewery officially opened in Strasbourg, at the Plaine des Bouchers, with a brand new production facility and beers "made in Alsace"

Dark brown with a frothy to creamy head. Aroma has notes of chocolate and upturned earth. Mildly smoky. Taste is mildly sweet with noticeable caramel, cherry bonbon and chocolate. A smoky and grainy bitterness takes over the finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Nice.

1/6/2019. Bottle from La Cave a Bulles, Paris, shared at the Krsko GP beer share. Pours hazy pale amber with a small bubbly off-white head. Aroma of malt, leafy hops, tropical fruit, caramel and pine. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium body, slight oily texture, average carbonation. Increasing bitterness to finish, quite piney, nice brew.

Bottle at home. Slight hazy golden with fizzy white head. Sweet grapes indeed, but also a nice malty backbone with soft caramel. Light spices, sweet 🥝 fruit, soft banana, white wine. Medium sweet and under medium bitter. Over medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. I like this series, and this one is pretty decent like the others.

A quality ipa, not too bitter, but the hop aroma is pleasant. The malt almost catches up, but is just shy. For a style I don’t love, it’s a good one. Les Berthom Lyon

Bottle at home. Clear golden with white head. Flowery hops, peppery notes, cloves, lime peel, swee pils malts, grapefruit, estery and earthy fruits. Medium sweet and bitter. Over medium bodied. The hops work well with the yeast, one of the more interesting Perle beers. Nice.

Bottle at Le Local. Bit hazy golden with no head. Sweet grapes, quite malty too though, soft spicy grape skins and medium sweet white wine. Light lychee and kiwi 🥝, soft grassy and bread. Medium sweet and bitter and very light tart. Over medium bodied with low carbonation. I usually quite like these Perle wine experiments, and this is pretty nice again.

Bottle shared thanks to Ivan. Dark golden with almost white head. Sweet caramel malts, grassy and flowery hops, dank weedy notes and soft peach. Medium sweet, bitter and bodied. Decent malts and you can taste it’s made with wet hopes. Decent but not that great.
