Description
Rogue Ales was founded in Ashland, Oregon in 1988 by Jack Joyce, Rob Strasser, and Bob Woodell. Construction of the first brewpub began in June 1988 in Ashland. The 10 bbl brew system was set up in the basement with a 60-seat Pub above. The Brewery and Pub opened in October 1988 to moderate success and soon, the company started looking to expand. In February 1989, construction began on the Bay Front Brew Pub in Newport, Oregon; it opened in May1989. Rogue now has four brewpub locations in Oregon: Newport, Astoria, Portland and Independence, and a fifth at the Rogue Nation World Headquarters in Newport.

I remember having this before I knew what Rogue was all about. What an eye-opener. This is classic Rogue - robust, with lots of hops, a good earthy maltiness and a surprising amount of style for a session ale.

This was a re-rate a long time coming. Golden colour with particular matter suspended. Aroma hints of lemongrass, orange and a bit of wood. Moderately bitter body with light citrus and rich pale malts.

Love that Rogue. Even a cream ale is great when they make it...............

Re-rate: I absolutely adored this beer when I first had it at the Blind Tiger in 1997 ($2/pint happy hour at that!). Since then, I’ve had little tastes and sips and none of them came close to what I remembered. But finally, a shade over 10 years later, I get around to a re-rate. Yeah, I suck. Chestnut brown, bright, thin head. Aroma is mainly a toasty-roasty dark malt. The flavour shows this as well, but brings in a sickly sweet artificial hazelnut element. The body is thin for a Rogue as is the hopping...yeah I know it’s a brown but something has to balance off that syrupy hazelnut. What the hell was I thinking...this is poor.

A nice full-bodied and flavorful porter. Nice chocolate hints - but at the same time, very dry, roasty and hopped. Still, I would like this better if it was sweeter and more of a dessert beer. It makes a good aperitif as it is, though. Other: thick, opaque black, huge firm head, perfect thick lace.

Very nice brown color. Small head forms - doesn't last long. Nutty aroma - very nice. Hoppiness apparent as soon as it hits the tongue - becoming sharper and more bitter as you swallow. An unexpected flavor. Mellows some as you finish the bottle. Maltiness slow becomes more apparent, an interesting trait. A nice easy drinking ale - a real treat from Rogue (as always....do they make a *bad* beer?).
