Sankt Gallen Inko Aji Parakeet Ale 5.5%
Specialty Grain

Matte old with thick white head that fizzed out in seconds. Medium bodied with a dry finish.

This isn’t what I expected at all. The aroma and flavor taste like caramel but in a pastry stout chocolate bar kind of way. Since it’s made with spelt, millet, etc I expected something different. I guess it’s the kinako they used in production.

Tap at Komachi. Dark brown with a low head. Nose is sweet raspberry, light chocolate, light roast. Sweet flavor, mainly raspberry, some chocolate, vanilla, very light roasted malt. Ligh tartness. Body is somewhat lacking for 8%, though it hides the alcohol well. Uninspiring. The raspberry seems to sweet and fake.

Bottle. Their April Fools' beer. Cloudy golden orange. Nose is big time curry, lots of cumin. Quite interesting. Flavor is too much, though, cumin led curry powder. Probably just dumped in the popular Japanese one in the jar with a native American chief on the label. Lemony, light body. Well done but not nice.

I was able to get my hands on this year’s April Fool’s brew courtesy of Rakuten.

Sankt Gallen カレーは飲み物
Curry is a Drink Hazy IPA 5.5%

This beer is full on!

It’s not my first curry beer but right from cracking it open I got a coriander and cumin aroma that made me think of kea curry.

The medium bodied brew added notes of lemongrass and even chickpeas.

It really is spot on like drinking a curry in hazy IPA form. It makes me want to pair it with a bowl of white rice.

What a trip! It’s a divisive brew, those who like spice will like it, doesn’t feel like beer but I’ve gotta say it looks good and is damn well made.

24/10/2024. Bottle from Lopia Kyoto Yodobashi Supermarket. Pours clear amber straw gold with a small frothy off-white head. Aroma is malty, chalky, caramel, hoppy, orange, herb, yeast. Moderate sweetness, medium plus bitterness. Moderate body, oily, average to soft carbonation. Developing slightly unpleasant bitter finish. Great bridge label, okay beer.

I picked up a salted caramel Sadaharu Aoki macaron at Isetan’s Salon du Chocolat to pair with Sankt Gallen’s 2024 limited chocolate beer for Valentine’s. Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout IBU 32 6.5% This deep black with a dark foam brew has a roasty aroma which after warming up adds elements of salted caramel. Medium bodied with a somewhat slick mouthfeel. The taste is chocolate syrup up front, roast notes then a very sweet caramel finish. The macaron accentuated the stout notes while some salted caramel truffles my folks sent me really ramped up the pastry sweet chocolate stout notes. Fun beer but pretty average on its own.

Feb. 2022 bottle. Nose is grape juice, chocolate, light roast. Grape juice is really big still. Black with a huge tan head. Sweet grape Fanta, bitter chocolate, bit of roasted malt. Roasty, toasty finish with grape Hi C and some hop bitterness. This isn’t terrible, but it doesn’t really work. Too much like grape juice or drink.

The last few years I just get error messages when trying to get Sant Gallen’s April Fools beer so when I saw it I tap I had to get it! Sankt Gallen Own Goal (Ou Eun Gol) IPA 6.5% Amber colored with light beige foam and a classic west coast piney hop bouquet. No surprise as it is sometimes called an OG IPA. Medium bodied with a semi-dry finish. The taste is pine and citrus hops plus balancing caramel maltiness. A decent beer.

This year’s valentine variant follows the tread in Japanese confectionery of the last year: pistachio. Sankt Gallen Pistachio Chocolate Stout 6.5%. IBU 34 Deep brown verging on black with a thin fizzy tan head which vanished in a blink. It’s got a roasty nutty aroma with a slick smooth mouthfeel on a medium to full body. The carbonation is scratchy and the taste is cocoa paste, mild nuttiness which reminds me of peanut butter beers I’ve had. It’s got a bit of chocolate. I paired it with some pistachio & white chocolate cookies on a butter cookie base. The cookie accentuates the nut character and gives you a salty aftertaste. Oh, it’s pretty sweet as it’s made with vanilla and lactose on top of the pistachio.
