Pours deep amber into a Sam glass. Off-white head pancakes as it recedes leaving spider lacing to coat surface. Maple syrup and smoke aromas. Thin, yet crisp with sweet caramel and maple upfront and a lasting slightly smoked finish.

Draught at the Lovin’ Cup. Dark gold color with lace. Big citrus nose with grapefruit, light malts. Great. Rather sweet malt flavor wth lemon and sweet orange, big citrus hops, grassy. A bit too sweet, but the hops are great and it’s darn good overall.

Not really my style of IPA. Not sure who brought this one to the September 3R6P gathering. +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy orange-amber color with a small white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was oddly funky, earthy, herbal and piney. The flavor was tangy, bitter and a touch rough with earthy, herbal and piney hops and undertones of nut and sour caramel. The finish was long, dryish, earthy and herbal. Full bodied.

On tap at the Ale House in Vestal NY Pours a surprisingly clear dark brown with ruby highlights when held to light. Creamy off white head shows moderate retention. Smells of pine and cirtus with hints of chocolate and coffee. Not quite porter like in the nose but the roast is definitely there. Pine and resinous taste mixed with a hint of chocolate and roasted grains. Medium body and carbonation level with a resiuos creamy mouthfeel. I really liked this one. Great Black IPA that almost ordered another one to my table.

On tap at the Ale House in Vestal NY. Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with a thinnish white head that did have good retention. Smells of pine resin and cirtus with a faint bready malt in the background. Taste is pine and citrus with grapefruit and a slight bready malt in the background. Smooth not harsh bitterness, but a nice hoppy presence. Sticky resinous mouthfeel, medium body and level of carbonation. Great easy drinking ipa with lots of flavor.

Pours a solid black color with a frothy tan head. Smells of milk chocolate, coffee and roasted grains. Not much in the way of hops in the aroma but lots of coffee. Taste is a rich thick creamy roasted grain and coffee mixed with milk and dark chocolate. Medium to thick body, light to medium level of carbonation. I tasted this first and while its not earth shattering in it’s complexity it is very tasty.

Bomber from Half Time. Pours very black with a slight creamy white/beige head. Roasted dark malt with evergreen aspects for aroma. Med+ body. Flavor is smooth dark roast malt with a good dose of fruit/resin hop. I’d say grapefruit above pine, but this is a mixed flavor situation and I’m having trouble separating components. And why try. It’s nicely bitter, full of malt flavor, and incredibly delicious.

Bomber from Half Time. Pours hazy amber gold with a small creamy beige head. Aroma is citrus and malt backed by some light stone fruit. Med+ body with creamy carb. Flavor has more than a hint of diacetyl, so ick. Butterscotch. Ick. Behind that is some nice fruit and floral. Hard to find the malt behind the butterscotch. The hop is nice tho. This rating will suffer on palate. It’s like a lot of good stuff lurks behind the butterscotch curtain. Maybe my palate will overdose and ignore; hope so.
