Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.

The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Clear, golden with a white head. Malty aroma with a vague whiff of honey. Light-bodied with flavours of pale malts and then a fairly dry finish. The honey notes are present but subdued and never sweet. 290307

A hazy dark amber beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet hoppy combined with notes of alcohol and prunes. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and quite a lot of hops as well as some grapefruit. The alcohol gives a slight burn.

Surprisingly good and the first beer from this brewer to impress me. Powerful hop aroma with lots of vegetables. Dark brown beer. The flavor has more hops and it is good, but not as good as the very nice hop aroma lead me to believe. Still, a good ipa.

Bottle. Dark amber brown beer with a beige head. Rich malt, light roast, light spice aroma. Caramel malt and citrus hop flavor with some spice. Nice balance. Lingering malt with a bit of citrus bitterness. Just enough bitterness. Easy drinking.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a nice off-white head. Big grapefruit aroma with some sweet malt and summer fruit. Grapefruit flavor with some malt backing. Not as strong of flavor as the aroma. Good hop flavor and decent bitterness. Some caramel and cocoa. Could be more bitter.

Bottle pours a clear medium copper witha huge light tan head that is very sticky and lasting. Lots of thick sticky lacing. Aroma is fairly light on the malts but lots of sweet citrusy hops. Flavor was sharper and more bitter that the aroma suggested. Feel is moderately heavy and quite smooth and soft. Plenty of stinging bitterness at the end. Fairly accurate com. description. Of the few locals this may be my favorite IPA

Great amber color and off-white head for an IPA. Aroma is rich with citrus and hops, taste is also packed with hops, citrus, pine, and some roasted maltiness. Nice blend and balance here, a solid IPA.
