Broughton Ales is a brewery in Broughton, in the Scottish Borders. The brewery was founded in 1979 by David Younger and James Collins in Broughton village and was the first initiated Scottish microbrewery. Broughton produces traditional cask conditioned beer, bottled beer and keg beer.

Bottle online from the Broughton Brewery. Pours black with a medium sized creamy beige head. Aromas of roasted malts and a little chocolate. Taste has roasted malts, milk chocolate, smoke, ash, some coffee, caramel and a little brown sugar. Nicely balanced. Medium to full body with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. Very decent stout.

Cask at The Scotia, close to the river in Glasgow. Dark clear amber with a small creamy head. Good caramels provide a pleasant richness to its malts, hiding its strength well.

Cask at Three Judges in the urban West End of Glasgow. Clear golden with a small creamy head. Hoppy with a small bitterness and a mildly honeyed aftertaste in the palate.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Malt, light liquorice aroma. Mahogany colour. Reasonable bitterness. On edge of scotch ale and Butch ESB. Easy drinking.

Bottle online from the Broughton Brewery. Pours an amber/brown colour with a thinnish creamy off-white head and nice lacing on the glass. Aromas of sweet toffee, caramel, doughy bread and apples. Taste is very malty with more sweet toffee and caramel, more doughy bread and stewed fruits and vegetables. Sweetish tang on the finish.Thinnish body with low carbonation (almost flat) on the slightly oily mouthfeel. Very light and easy drinking beer. Would be a good session ale. Decent.

Bottle from my local grocery store ‘Loco’. Pours a clear dark brown almost mahogany colour with a medium sized thick creamy beige head. Aromas of dry dark fruits, plums, fruit cake, caramel and a little brown sugar. Taste has more of the dark fruits, raisins, figs, more plums fruit cake and caramel, added hints of liquorice and a sweetish brown sugar finish which is not overly so and has decent balance. Full body, low carbonation and very smooth mouthfeel. I will be getting more of these to enjoy in the winter months and over Christmas. Excellent beer.

Cask up the White Lady. Pours clear golden amber with a tight white head. Aromas of light tropical fruit, citrus and caramel. Taste is sweet up front, caramel notes, leading to a bitter green finish.
