Associated Venue: Toms River Brewing
Established in 2013
The Irish are one of the many proud heritages that make up New Jersey’s past, present and future. A large portion of New Jersey’s population can claim Irish ancestry and Toms River is home to the most.
Toms River Brewing has its roots in Rinn Duin Brewery. Rinn Duin became well-known for its UK and Irish-style ales. They developed a cult-like following over their first four years.
Enter Jim Mulligan. With a background in natural extracts, Mulligan acquired the brewery in 2018. His vision is that a wide range of beer styles can be explored through the addition of natural fruits and extracts, along with an expanded yeast and hop selection. He retained “Bob the Brewer” and hired “Irish Nick”, a career salesman, concert promoter and lifelong beer enthusiast to hit the streets and spread the word.
In 2020, professional brewer Matt Hynes was hired as Operations Manager. With his vast experience at different craft breweries around the US, Matt has instilled in the brewery the motto of “we want to make the best beer possible and the rest will fall into place” as the guiding principle that now leads every decision the brewery makes.
The whole team is excited about the positive feedback they have received and are very optimistic about the future.
Toms River Brewing offers an opportunity to explore beer styles with an expanded natural flavor palate. Raise a glass–we can all be a little Jersey Irish.

Translucent reddish brown color. Brief beige head. Faint roasted malt nose with notes of cocoa and Worcestershire sauce. Flavor is more of the same with a touch of coffee. Dry malty finish. Light bodied and drinkable.

On tap at brewery. Mahogany red color. Brief beige head. Woody vinous nose. Flavor is tart and dry with notes of cherry and vinegar. Noticeable funky barrel and grape nuances. Light bodied yet complex. Ok but not something I would drink a lot of.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle from ED5388 poured into a glass. Translucent red with small beige head. Aroma is caramel malt, medium body, medium/light carbonation, and small bubble lacing. Taste is rich Irish caramel malt with balancing herbal hops. About the best I have had for the style.

On tap at brewery. Opaque black color. Small creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malt and dark roasted coffee. Flavor is more of the same. Roasted malt and dark coffee. Dry and bitter. Thin bodied, with some nuttiness. Slightly tang burnt caramel notes in mid taste. Finish is dry with a faint licorice prescence, but coffee flavor dominates. Lacking in body, but good.

On tap at brewery. Dark black with a small tan head. Big roasted smoky malt nose with notes of burnt embers. Flavor is more of the same with pronounced smoked malt from the get go. Not overdone, just right. Good septet dark malt and oat flavor. Very drinkable and tasty smooth for an Imperial stout. I enjoyed this.

Growler from the brewery. Hazy reddish brown color with a small creamy beige head. Aroma has notes of ginger root, and cinnamon. Rich dark malt flavor with more cinnamon and ginger. There is an underlying hint of tangerine here as well. Nice bitter, spicy hops come in to play as well. Some burnt malt in finish. Spices dominate the palate. I really enjoyed this.
