Sample at the taproom. The beer pours nearly black with some mahogany around the edges, and a medium frothy tan head that diminishes gradually to a film. Sparse strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked wood, malt and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of roast malt, smoked chicory, coffee and earthy hops. The finish is smokey with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Sample at the taproom. The beer pours a clear orange color with a medium thin white head that burns away steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Herbal hops, fruit and malt in the nose. Light-bodied with flavors of grassy hops, citrus and malt. The finish is mildly bitter with a lingering hoppy aftertaste. Decent SMASH beer overall.

Bottle thanks to Greenspoint. Pours a cloudy copper with small beige head. The aroma is strong caramel, vanilla, molasses. Medium mouth, very sweet, brandy, toffee, boozy finish, very good.

[2/21/15] Draught at Toronado in San Diego. Black with a brown head. Great aroma of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla and a bit of soy sauce. Sweet flavor with chocolate, bourbon, vanilla and an alcoholic touch. Full-bodied. Great.

Tap. Pours clear mahogany, small tan head, dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is quite light, a bit of smoke and roast. Flavor is light sweet, light plus bitter, not really a lot of flavor, some breadiness, roast. Minimal smoke. Medium body, lingering bitterness. Swing and a miss.

Tap. Pours hazy amber with a small off-white head and decent lacing. Aroma is faint with notes of yeast and herbal scents. Flavor is medium sweet, some rye spiciness, floral and herbal with zesty bitterness, actually kind of in your face offputting bitterness on the finish. Medium light body.
