Bottle, 7%. Aroma of bread and fermenting wort. Hazy dark golden colour. Big stable rocky white head. The flavour is malty with a vanilla touch. Low bitterness. Marshmallow aftertaste. Creamy mouthfeel and carbonation.

Bottle shared. Hazy light orange color, white head. Smell and taste malts, lightly wood, apple peel, lightly vinous. Soft carbonation, medium body. Quite nice.

Thick, stable, dense, very yellow head over clear-ish orangey copper beer. Soapy, yet attractive exotic fruit nose, citrus. Dry flavour, clay, chalk, citruspeel. Bit dusty feel. Some toasted malts. Pretty slick, not lean. Medium carbonation. Not half bad, even when slightly overage. Thanks to Stef!

Robiaantje – this time apparently no longer brewed at Boelens but at Valduc – aged on rum barrels from a hobby brewery called ‘Zuidkant’ in Borsbeek near Antwerp, only 3000 bottles made. Violent gusher! Off-white, mousy, membrane-lacing, medium thick, frothy head on a misty pale orangey-hued peach blonde beer. Aroma of ripe banana, canned apricot, white rum indeed but not too overpowering, amaretto, rusty iron, white bread, vegetable soup, light DMS note in the background. Fruity onset, ripe banana, sweet peach and apple, sharply stinging and very minerally (over)carbonation, smooth sweet bready malt body with a light caramelly edge and lots of residual honeyish sweetness on top, leading to a sweet and clearly (rusty) oxidation-affected finish with indeed a presence of rum, in a spicy-boozy as well as somewhat sweet and marzipan-like way, but most of all providing strong, heating booziness; light herbal hop bitter note in the end but drowning in the alcoholic glow, while actual wood notes, as one would expect from a beer claiming to be barrel aged, remain all but absent. Tastes more like a rum-infused sweet tripel than a rum barrel aged beer – and one that got quite severely oxidized in the process as well. Not a great success at all – and apart from the fact that I personally do not like rum to begin with, I would recommend Zuidkant to further finetune the base beer itself as well, as it is clearly not fit for any barrel treatment at this stage.
