Description
Over 10 years ago, Rob and Kelly Horn packed their bags and made the trek from a small town in New Jersey to another small town on the opposite coast: Olympia, Washington. Their obsession with the craft beer scene was immediate. After years of home brewing they decided to make it official and opened a tiny brewery in August of 2014.

Triceratops Brewing Company (with the last name Horn and three awesome kids, was there really any other choice?) began its brewing operations out of the Horn’s home garage. Three years later the couple opened a Tumwater tasting room. Since the grand opening in June of 2017, the brewery has had a steady flow of great customers, good friends, and craft beer lovers.

16 oz can poured, picked up at Town and Country as part of their mystery pack. Mostly clean and shiny golden pour. I'm glad this one was included as a single. I'm not sold on the substyle after dozens of tries, but I refuse to give up on it. Sturdy grain on the nose, providing balance to a citrus heavy hop nose. Really easy drinking, crisp like an IPL, citrus and floral hops with a modest bitterness. Not sure which hop is showcased here, but has a classic NW feel to it. Really nice IPA all around here.

32 oz growler from Route 2, Monroe. Clean and shiny golden pour. Lasting foam head. Nice, crisp, surprisingly easy drinking imperial. Pils grains up front, with a moderately bitter finish. Unique IPA that drinks like a cold IPA or imperial pils, or kolsch. Fun brew, unique hybrid of styles I'd say. Pretty good overall.

16 oz can poured, picked up at Hop and Hound. Always enjoy picking up a unique style. A pale golden pour, slightly cloudy, patchy fizz head. Aroma has some straw like grain, and remains mild but inviting. Really refreshing lager, some soft grassy hops that blend nicely with the malt bill. Crisp, tasty finish. Always loved this style, and this was quite enjoyable. Nice brew here.

Draft pour, enjoyed at Hop and Hound. Still trying to decide if I'm on board with this style, so I'm just sticking to my beloved local Brewers offerings for now. Clean golden pour. Pathy fizz head. Has a real bite to it. Gentle aroma, soft grains. Earthy grain up front in the flavor. Slight citrus. Viciously dry in the finish. Not bad.

Light amber colour. Drops bright. Thin head. The aroma has a light spicy hoppiness, with a slightly bready malt note. On the palate, it's dry, with a spicy hop, light grapefruit note. Definitely not a lot of sugars in this, so I'll give them that. The issue of course is that the sugars have a role to play in allowing the hops to shine, and here they just come across bitter and a little bit harsh.

Draft pour at Triceratops. Second visit. Clean and clear golden apple juice color pour. Mild aroma of straw grains. Matching flavor. A bit of a corn like flavor going on, to pair with a ton of straw and earthy grain. Flavor is a little plain, but not bad. A pretty easy drinking lager. A bit unique for sure.

Draft pour pint at Hop and Hound. Listed at a much more modest 5%, opposed to the imperial fruit beer status of 6.7% listed before. Hazy and bright orange pour, tons of cream foam head. Tons of fresh strawberry here as expected. Totally reminds me of the strawberry shortcake ice cream bars. A childhood favorite of mine and every sane person as well! Slight hint of pineapple as well. Dominated by fruit, this beer is, but at least it's a solid fruit profile that doesn't get too sweet for my taste. Good beer overall.

Draft pour at WA Brewers Festival. Hazy lemonade color pour, active fizz head. Visited Triceratops once, as they share a walk with Matchless. I visited both the same afternoon. I had to chuckle that they are also best door neighbors here at the festival. Cream, citrus nose here. Citrus fruit hops, cream, and write a bite in the flavor. A touch of a plastic like note. High carb bite. The flavor is really good overall, but the carb and bite were high for me on this. Close to being a great one for me.
