Description

A hazy golden amber ale with a thin big bubbled off white head. I get a bit of the mustard in aroma, lightly vinagry, and notes of herbs. In mouth, a decent crisp malt, biscuitty, with very herbaceous spices, a bit too astringent, and a bit on the watery side. However, this one lets itself drink without to much resistance.BB 2nd quarter 2009.

An odd but well made and interesting beer. First, the very high abv is expertly hidden. It cannot be smelled or tasted, which is a sign of the quality. Unusual aroma, rotting cheese, mold, and yeast. Malt and light fruit are secondary. Thick, brown, cloudy beer. Considerable sediment. Lots of flavors here, raisins and sweet malt, but also wildflowers and prairie grass, yeast, some wild yeast. Not quite sweet and not quite dry. Great palate, and whether one likes the flavor or not, superb craftsmanship.

Man, this one is big. Bottle of unknown age, it was a little dusty on the shelf, with a faded label, along with another dozen of its kind. I figured 12% ought to hold up. Nothing major regarding age, perhaps a hint of paperiness in the nose and finish. Begins with a huge fruity plummy raisiny nose, with a background of molasses. Tons of chewy raisiny special B like fruitiness in the flavor, with a big heavy rounded sweet finish all the way through. Does a pretty fair job of balancing all that alcohol. Heavily yeasted, as a cloudy reddish brown color, medium head. This is a big belgian in all respects.

Slight gushing to huge, dark yellow head leaving shards of lace, over fully hazy dark brown beer with a huge yeast deposit. Rich nose, chocolatey, slightly sweet with a spike of acidity that has become typical for the Regenboog. Fresh, fruity, estery. Wry taste, with very earthy to tobacco notes over the constant presence of acidity. The wry, dry bitterness seems to win out in the end, were it not for the serious CO² titillation. Another typical & constant Regenboog feature. If I’m not totally convinced, it is because of the clashing of the flavours, instead of blending. Burnt malts, hint of black cardemom. Alcohol pretty hidden, MF seems thinner because of the acidity, no doubt. Quite slick. This is certainly no Imperial Stout as we’re used to. Fine with me, but then the taste ought not to war internally. Still, I think for this genre, another yeast culture might have been preferable.

I first had this on tap in January on tap at the Gingerman in NY. It was called Speciale and after a month or so of trying to figure out what beer it was I finally found out (with the help of the brewer on BBB) that this was in fact a re-label. Except at the time the beer was a beautiful, delicious, estery banana, bubblegum, and sweet Belgian yeasty monster. I loved it so much but never rated it. This rating is for a 33cl bottle from Glouglouburp, 2006 vintage, which is remarkably different..

Poured into my new Rodenbach Grand Cru smaller sized tulip glass (I am using it for everything right now). Pours with a thick medium head that turns into a surface covering lacing. Color is dark muted golden, slight orange-ish. It’s full of light yet just thick enough to not allow visibility through the beer. Aroma is strong and starts off with an earthy, thick, moist forest/milky lactose sweetness, seems yeasty to me. Light banana esters behind that. Its sweet, original and strong, what’s not to like. Taste is Belgian yeasty sweet with strong sweet pond cake, a grainy aspect, and a light herbal-ness. Finishes with light white bread sweetness and a hint of bitterness, and just slightly dry. A medium body beer that’s remarkably drinkable for the sweetness present and the alcohol content (which by the way is barely felt). Oh, btw, where is the pumpkin? I do get a slightly starch-ish feeling in the beer, is that it?

11.2 oz bottle - Pours murky light brown with a thin head. The aroma has yeast, malt, mustard, and a hint of citrus. The flavor is sweet and spicy with the mustard less than obvious. I just didn’t care for the combination of spices in this beer. It seemed like a fairly mediocre belgian ale with odd spices thrown in that don’t really work for me.

Bottle (from mgumby). Musty lemon and peach malt aroma. Cloudy orange-yellow with minimal head. Overripe peach flavor initially with a sour, dry lemon and wheat malt flavor. A very nice dry witbier.
