Description
Since 1926, brewing has no longer been a matter of chance at Bénifontaine, but rather is an art which has been passed down from generation to generation. From microbrewery to family business, Castelain Brewery has had a loyal following thanks to its artisanal beers and its respect for tradition. Thoroughness, patience, authenticity: these have been the key words for Castelain bières de garde and seasonal beers since the creation of the brewery.

75cl bottle from Auchan, Calais. Deep amber comlour with thin off white lasting head. Slightly sickly aroma. Bit syrupy and treacley in mouth. Not as good as the blonde or brune from the same brewery. Some toffee on end and some hop but overall not that impressed

A hazy orange beer with a nice white head. The aroma is sweet yeasty, and spicy with coriander standing out. The the flavor is just as the aroma and with a dry end.

My first biere de garde and I enjoyed it very much. French in origin, but all characteristics are of a Belgian ale, much like a saison, but there is also complex yeast and malt make this similar to an abbey style beer. Combined, these qualities show why biere de gard is hard to fit into any category. This beer is very floral, with a pleasant light body. Some light fruit flavors.

Golden in colour. White head, leaving a lace on the glass. A perfumed aroma. Also grassy aroma. Sweet flavor but also spicy flavour. A little think mouthfeel and a grassy and hoppy aftertaste.

Mostly lasting head, wonderfull amber colour, average aroma, and finish a bit bitter. A little disapointment, but an OK beer.

750 ml bottle, corked "champagne" style, bought in Denmark. Pale golden colour, like a pilsener. Enormous and lingering fluffy white head, leaves a nice lacing. Delicate yeasty aroma with notes of grass, flowers and honey. Pleasant mild flavour with a certain spicyness and decent hops, but light bodied for its 6.4% ABV. Well balanced and "dangerously drinkable".

Bottle (St. Amand). Wet mown grass and pepper aroma. Dark amber color - slightly cloudy with moderate but quickly collapsing head. Smooth hay and wheat flavor - little carbonation and acidity. Nice beer but would like it better with more flavor and body.
