Orange coloured, pours extremely lively with rich, firm head. Acidic near lambic-ish aroma. Oaky and balsamic, extremely drinkable for an 8% ale. Balanced and immensly flavourful.

Of all De Dolle beers, this must be the most lively; it pours a bright golden color, one finger, under a cloud of foam. The malt aroma is spicey (coriander, mild cloves), with honey undertones, sweet; very interesting. The flavor is sweetish, malty, a bit spicy; the bitterness has been attenuated, and the alcohol increased. It’s a perfectly mature beer, even if it may have lost some hopping.

Golden to amber color. Very nice aroma, with hop, old hops, wood. Great taste, complex, malty, perfectly balanced, with some fruitness, caramel.
I didn’t expect so much, De Dolle is great.

Pale amber colour, clean, creamy head. Classic aroma for these beers, of malt, candy sugar, hop, light wood cask. Dry, bitter and pretty sour; tart, astringent. The palate is as well dry, bitter, astringent, a good digestive.

Bottled, 1992 vintage. Clear golden. Tart and full of lactic acidity. Dry and lightly papery. Lively and crisp, near lambicish. Outstanding!

Funny! I just read my old ratings of this. I tried it twice and had trouble with the sourness, but noted that I should try it again, giving it a 3.5. Well, many sour beers later, I find this not all that sour! First a doughy yeasty aroma, very classic of De Dolle, very phenolic. Some mild acidity up front, but quickly melding with a very sugary sweet malt body, with dates and raisins following that. Finish is alcoholic and hot, with peppery stings on the soft palate and throat. There seems to be a touch of spicy hop occupying a narrow range between the sweet/sour front and the hot finish - its a very fleeting sensation, but it does add to the complexity of this fine fine Belgian ale.

Murky dark yellow, lively rich head. Grassy hops up front. Sweet and full bodied with soft, rounded mouthfeel. Pepper and tar strikes, and then gentle toffee takes over until the grassy bitter finsih. Rich and complex.
Old rating, bottled. Dark yellow. Sweetish smell. Light and lively mouthfeel. Sweet and very hop aromatic. Big biterness. Very tasty! (8/4/8/15/16)

Chestnut color; despite the age, it has too much carbonation, and the glass fills up completely with a huge head. It has a deep caramel aroma. Good body strength, with caramel and chocolate flavor; very light smoke; still pleasantly sweet; some oxidisation reveals its age. The bitterness is quite low, some of it deriving from the darker malts. Still good.

Rich with a full malt palate and puckering sourness that I find rather pleasant. The sourness is very remiscient of sour cherries, and as Oakes mentioned, warrants comparison to a kriek lambic. Cloudy dark brown color, as appropriate, with excellent creamy head and complete head retention. High carbonation helps cut the sweet/sour flavors and the beer on the whole is exceptionally drinkable.

Rich dark ale that can become quite lean and acidic with age, developing flavours remeniscent of Liefmans Kriek.
