Pours dark brown, ok white head. Smell is weak, some dark malts. Taste is rather sweet, some dark malts. Buttery ( trough maltyness, no diacethyl ) OK mf and carbo. Little to no uniqueness, but not bad.

Pours rather unclear, darker blonde. Good white head. Smell is weak. Taste is sweet, yeasty, somewhat malty, and surprisinlgy herbal. I also get notes of honey. Cardamon is rather clear as well, and carries most of the herbal notes along with it. Good mf and carbo

Shortlived, ever so lightly yellowish head over (cold)hazed metallic orange beer. Citruspeel, alcohol, liqueurish, tad vinous nose. Spicy yeastnotes, hints at toast/cornflakes and white candi sugar. Again citrus(orange)peel orally, spicy touch (though I’d be hard pushed to call it cardamom), yeast. Warming up, I’d venture tarragon, but even later, I’d indeed start to think about green cardamom. Again just slightly toasted. Touch of (citrus)liqueur. Feels much more carbonated than it looks; together with the citrusflavour refreshing, tittilating. Light body, seems quite well attenuated. Pity of the notesystem - this one is better than the sum of its parts.

’Bière noire’, so I assume this is supposed to be a stout, from a new Wallonian microbrewery in the Belgian Ardennes; 75 cl bottle bought at Diesters Bierfestival. Moussy, quite thick, pale yellowish beige, fairly retaining head over a very dark reddish chestnut brown beer with lively fizz and blackish ’soul’ but translucent on the edges. Aroma instantly recalls FFF (freshly fermented farmland), even menure and sewer water (H2S), residing a bit after a while to make room for more flattering impressions of baker’s chocolate, stale coffee grounds, roasted pine nuts, caramel, raisins, hints of soap, wet cardboard, ’haemoglobin’ iron, dried flowers, dark candi sugar, bubblegum, brown bread, dry hay, baked banana, red wine, some very vague vanilla perhaps. Sweetish, estery onset of banana, dates, pear and blackberries, soft carbo, medium thick and ’fatty’ mouthfeel, ’deep’ sourish edge, caramelly malt character, strangely a little bit metallic, slightly toasted, bitter chocolate-like in the end but not thoroughly so, lightly coffeeish in a ’dull’ kind of way providing a touch of roasted bitterness, but the sweetish caramelly flavour prevails; there is a herbal, leafy hop bitterness in the end as well, matching well with the bittering malts; some warming alcohol in the tail, but nothing astringent or disturbing there. A bittersweet flavour remains long after swallowing, but much more sweet (and caramelly) than bitter and even a bit cloying. The H2S odour bothered me a lot in the beginning but luckily faded away after half an hour; could use more body as well as roasted bitterness, especially for an 8% ABV stout. Too many new Belgian breweries make attempts at heavy stouts nowadays but do not quite get there; intentions are good in this one, but this needs a bit more finesse, boldness and density before being sold in a relatively expensive bottle with ’golden’ letters. I do feel it has certain ’budding’ qualities, though, and perhaps ageing a bottle for a few years could prove interesting. In terms of style, this is the centre of an imaginary triangle formed by quadrupel, imperial porter and Belgian export stout, I guess you could say. Promising, but needs a lot more work.
