Description
19th century land-use plan of the area mentions a brewery owned by a certain Petronnella De Troch.
Even older records indicate that her father, Pieter De Troch, was running a brewery on the same site in the late 18th century. Petronnella married Egidius De Troch and in 1898 their son Louis took the family business over. Louis Married J. De Neve, and their son, also Louis, inherited the brewery and farm in 1936. The same Louis married M.L. Van den Moortel.
Their nephew Jos Raes and his wife M. Vanderhasselt took on the family tradition in 1974 and have been running this rare craft brewery ever since. In 2002, their son Pauwel Raes joined his parents into the family business.
In July 2012 Pauwel & his wife Kristel Schelfthout took over the brewery to continue the brewery tradition !

Golden color, not much head. Sourish, sugary fruity nose, not sure if it is apricot or what. Sugary sweet, slightly earthy and acidy, hints of apricot and honey. Too sweet but not so overly sweet than Chapeau’s mirabelle or banana.

Dark deep red, not much head. Tart, slighlty sugary rasberry aroma. Sweet and sugary but tart too, acidic in the finish. Rasberry flavors dominate of course. Not so artifical, but too sweet.

Hazy orange color, not much head. Sourish flavor of sugared plums. Medium-bodied, almost flat. Starts really sugary, then more or less artifical flavor of plum and sourness of balsamico. Sugar bomb...

Popping the wetted cork reveals vegetal and corn syrup like flavors, very powdery and quite well summed up by the "baby diaper" moniker. Corn cobs, wet wool, musty corks and a high amount of acetic acid. Any lambic qualities that this may have possessed have been completely subsumed by the thick, caramel/candi sugar. A slight sourness on the end, not a lactic, but a sharp, dry sourness reminiscent of spoiled veggies soaking in rusty water. Faint in the aroma at least.
Not so in the flavor. The beginning I can handle, that being thick, syrupy, sugary, plant-like notes, mixed with vanillin and musty, dry cork flavor. However, this sharpness/rusty sourness, whatever you want to call it, ruthlessly invades the palate providing strong notes of iron, dirty, cold steel and rotten veggies. Not palateable, and in fact, I couldn’t even swallow a single mouthfeel, not trusting the integrity of the ingredients. Mix of wateriness to smooth syrupy sugariness for a texture, with some fair carbonation still perceptible. The beer is much too dark for a gueuze, something like Lancaster Old Sourpuss (though not quite so dark), with an immediately diminishing ring of bubbles.
I can understand the heavy sweetness of this pseudo lambic, but where are the veggies and hugely mineralic/metallic notes coming from?? Glad I tried it, in that it makes me appreciate the true lambic producers that much more (though de troch did a decent job with the chapeau cuvee, oddly enough).
Poor man’s faro is right. This wouldnt even score too much higher in that style.

Best before March 1997 375mL bottle consumed on 11/25/2005. Astonishingly highly carbonated. Plenty, but not exceedingly so, of off-white head is very well-retained atop a clear copper-amber-pale-gold body, with light lacing and initial vigorous carbonation visible. Aroma of wood pulp, dirt, sandalwood, wet sawdust, cider vinegar, old musty yeast and maybe a touch of vanilla. Little to no wild yeast, though I have little experience identifying Belgian beers of this age, and I also have no idea the percent of lambic in this. The flavor is musty, woody and quite cidery, and of course, sugary. Simple table sugar, or light corn syrup-like in flavor, but actually, not horribly done. Of course I would prefer it to not be there, as it bullys the other flavors, but it’s not quite cloying and not syrupy. Light oak notes are most evident aside from the sugar, while some light acids gather on the finish. If there is brett here, it’s very hard to distinguish amongst the sugar/oak flavor. Finish is lightly tart, just faintly so, with more sugar and a strange, almost vegetal note present, perhaps wet sawdust again. Mouthfeel is not oxidized that much, nor very thinned out. Plenty of carbonation, though low and soft, is still apparent, with a wet, slippery sort of feel. Hmm, I need to learn more about these.
