In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

Bottle from Geers. Clear amber, small, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of bacon, BBQ herbs, tobacco, caramel, brioche, dried banana, wood. Taste has sweetish banana & red apple going over a caramelly malty base, with notes of smoky bacon, meat & clove present throughout. Earthy hops in the finish, lingering bitter wood & smoky tobacco. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Another great addition to the Schlenkerla range; this one is more accessible as a Rauchbier.

Beer Love: pours yellow with a white head. Aroma is smokey, lightly lactic, burnt wood, little wheaty and a tas grassy. Taste is smoky, lightly bitter, especially at the finish. Body pretty nice in spite of small size.

Bottled 500ml. -Courtesy of Marko, shared with him & Hrabren. Dark brown coloured, medium sized pale beige head, smoke in the nose. Toasted malt, caramel, smoked sausages and light caramel with touch of wood in the finish.
