About
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

0.5 l bottle shared with Ogi and Marko, thanks. Unclear dark amber to brown, small beige head. Aroma is intensely smokey, smoked ham and smoked dried sausages. Hints of malts, caramel and smoked cheese. Really intense. Light to medium body, smoked cheese flavour, malts, some caramel, some toast. A hint of minerals. Smooth. Dry finish.

Bottle , vintage 2019, at bbd. Pours clear very dark maroon, with a big creamy mocha head. Aroma is smoked malts with dark bread, liquorice, muscovado and dried fruits, as well as floral hops, heather, tannins and wooden barrels. Full body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is smoked malts with syrupy bread, burned caramels, chocolate and dried fruits, as well as floral hops, tannins and wooden barrels. Fabulous finish with lingering smoke and cellary notes.

Smoke and light lemon. Pours clear golden with pretty good head and lacing. Light smoky bitter end. Good for style. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottle at Pigs Ear BF 2025. Dark russet brown colour. Thin beige head. Gos that is delicious. Good smoke smoked bacon. Good smoke. Funnily enough I liked the Helles Marzen more. This is too fizzy. Bit angular. And prefer the regular marzen to this too. Its still good but other beers from Heller are better. Its good just not excellent

Bottle at Pigs Ear 2025. Hazy copper red beer lasting off white head. Smoke aroma but not heavy smoke. Its delicious. Like the helles but fuller in mouth. Fuller in flavour. More smoke but not full on marzen. So drinkable. My new favourite Schlenkerla.

Caramel with an off-white head. Caramel, faint smoke, a bit o’ chocolate, and bitter notes. Thin bodied. Finish has light caramel and grain notes that are bulldozed by intense bitterness. Overall, it’s a decent brew for what it is.
