Description
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

Can at home. Yellow pour and sudsy white too. Nose is smoked grains and some citrus. Tatses of lemon, smoky wood chips, hay, touch of bacon, little plastic. Thin bodied.

500ml bottle. Pours a mostly clear (before the sediment dropped in) golden with a huge thick frothy white head, great retention once settled.
Aroma is wonderfully smokey - meat and peat, ham, sausages, bready malt. Taste is similar with wheaty bready malt flavours and noticeable hop bitterness (citrus), peaty and meaty smoke overtones throughout. Excellent mouthfeel/texture, very soft, bubbly, massaging carbonation. Feels like a much bigger beer than it actually is. Really enjoyed this, far more than I expected to.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Clear deep chestnut. Solid beige foam. Nose has light ham smoke. Wood char. Dark fruit. Some bonfire toffee. Taste is semi sweet with some dryness. Easy drinking affair with rolling soft carbonation. Gets a little earthy and woody bitter on the finish.

Sample courtesy of Grumbo, cheers Graham! Golden colour, white foam head and aroma of smoke, sausage, peat, grain. Taste is grainy, pale malt, smoked, peaty, with fruity citric hop bitterness and some saltiness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying peated bitter & salty finish. Nicely drinkable.

It is not my favourite style but it is a good beer, really smocked, you have the impression to drink some burnt wood, heavy to drink, tasting it a long time ago.

Poured from 500mL bottle (bb 06/2026). Clear blonde gold with full white head. Nice smoke aroma, taste is light and subdued with a nice smoke underlay. What you would expect of Schlenkerla doing a Grodziskie. Nice.

500 ml bottle. Pours a reddish brown with full head. Aromas of creamy smoke, chocolate malts, dark fruit and rye bread. Flavors follow same with less smoke and more bready malts. Really nicely balanced for a Rauchbier and easy to drink.

Unclear dark golden with a foamy head. Lots of smoked ham, smoked wheat, whiskey malt, lemon zest, floral hops, grapefruit. Mild dry zesty bitterness, grainy sweetness, smoky umaminess and slightly salty. Light bodied, watery milky texture, soft to lively carbonated, dry zesty smoky bittersweet finish. A very nice Grodziskie, smoky, flavourful, yet very light bodied.

Bouteille 50cl de et partagée avec Tderoeck, merci!
BB 02/2026.
