In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

Bottle shared at home tasting. Ruby brown pour with an off white head. Aroma of sweet malts fruit and caramel. Same aspects in flavour with a medium body and low to medium carbonation.

June 2010: Brown 500ml bottle poured into a ’Corsendonk’ badged stemmed tulip and a vase shaped ’Watzdorfer’ pilsner glass. The beer was a true amber colour, glistening in the sunlight (it was a rare warm and sunny afternoon today). The head an off-white foaming layer of bubbles, lacing produced as the beer flew down my throat. Malts more than hops dominate the flavours both in the aroma and taste, although this is a well balanced beer, even if it does lean towards a maltier feel. The 4.7% ABV sits well within the brew and I thought it very easy to drink and I’ll be having more. NEW BIT: In Aug 2011I saw this in a supermarket down at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands; certainly gets about!

ChrisOs Easter Tasting. Clear dark red - amber beer, little pale tan head. Semi dry crispy palate. Tangy dark malt - a little bitter. Bubblegum esters. Dry finish. Okay if a bit clunky.

Originally rated October 2004. A beer named after Monthy Python. Coming from Black Sheep brewery, must be interesting. Poured a beautiful copper-orange with a big creamy head and lots of lacing. Floral and hoppy nose with hints of oranges and apples. Starts off with a caramel taste and finishes on a medium hop bitterness. Medium carbonation. Refreshing with the sweetness complimenting the bitterness. I am still not dissapointed with a brew from Black Sheep.

Bottle at Chriso’s Easter tasting 2012. It pours deep brown, with a thin off-white head. The nose is caramel, roasted malt, toffee and Scottish tablet. The taste is caramel, roasted malt, charcoal, chocolate, meaty, wood and brown sugar, with a dry-roasted finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. An all-round good offering from Black Sheep.

Tap @ The Mayor of Old Town Foco. Transparent, dark orange appearance with a fluffy, pearl white head. A touch buttery, light caramel, toasty bready aroma. A little bit of fruit tang, light butterscotch, grassy, light caramel flavor. Pass.
