Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

1 pint and 0.9 fl. oz. (Tempered over burning witches) Light copper color with tall creamy off white head. Very light aroma. What aroma there is is mostly malt and a hint of yeast. First taste is sweet lightly roasted malts and a bit of tin. I guess that might be coming from the yeast. Next sips were more of the grainy malt and then a bit of hop flavor with sour yeast. The aftertaste continued with the grain malt flavor along with a little bittering hops. Nice tasting beer. I enjoyed it.

Bottled. Coppercoloured, mediumsized white head. Aroma of hops, malts and fruit. Some sour notes also. Flavour is grassy hoppy with weak fruitish notes. This is just pure crap, just the like the crappy TV soap opera this most likely is named after...

Bottle picked up from Teso 23-04-06. I couldn’t agree more with the previous poster, whilst I cannot find much to fault with Black Sheep beers, I also find very little praiseworthy in them, ok, it’s copper coloured, bitter, malty etc but they are the beer equivalent of a warbler, i.e. difficult to distinguish from a multitude of other similar specimens.

16.9 oz bottle - Pours cloudy amber with a medium sized, rapidly fading head. The aroma is light and smells mostly of malts with a touch of yeast and hops. The taste is dry and malty with a lightly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is quite thin. Overall this would be an okay session beer, but it’s not too impressive. The price was too high given the decidedly average quality.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal, Stavanger. ABV on the label is 4.2%, also confirmed by the brewery website. Has the ABV really been 5% before and changed? or has the ABV at RB simply been incorrect all the time? Clear amber colour, large off-white lasting head. Moderate carbonation. Moderate but pleasant hoppy aroma, hints of fruits, oak and leather. Flavour is mildly spicy and fruity, slightly acidic. Tolerable hops in the finish. Refreshing and easy drinking. Not too bad for a pasteurised moderate-ABV bitter.
