Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

Mahogany in colour, with a thin, off-white, head. Sweet, brown sugar and tangerine aroma, with leafy hops and some fruitcake notes. Flavour was much of the same, with plenty of sweetness, more fruits, and a suggestion of toastiness, before a moderately bitter finish. Fine.

Handpull cask at the Last Drop Inn, York. Light to mid-brown, clear with a medium to large tight beige head. Dusty and malty aroma with caramel and aromatic spice notes. I was expecting an overly sweet taste but was met with more nuance, with some toffee and bitter horehound. Light body for the ABV. A decent beer but not the pinnacle of the style; perhaps it’s relatively high score on here is down to legacy rates?

Handpull cask at the Three-Legged Mare, York. Light gold and clear as a bell with a film of off-white head on top. Melon, grapefruit and butter (not in a diacetyl way but pure, fresh, cold butter) in the aroma. Sweet taste, pink grapefruit, agave syrup and a touch of banana leaf. The flavours clock off early and there’s only bettering hop in the finish. Watery body, soft carbonation. Starts off incredible and ends less so, but it’s a decent drink for a worthy cause.

Handpull cask (£5 per pint!!!) at the Maltings, York. Dark mahogany with a tight beige head. Chocolate and liquorice notes, some light caramel. Sweet, mellow taste with souring whisky notes and gentle ashy hop in the finish. Thick, smooth body, soft carbonation. A good if basic imperial stout, aided by being served in optimal condition.

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 15/10/22. Near black in colour with a slight, off-white, head. Plain chocolate throughout, a touch of sweetness, some vanilla oak, before a rich, malty, finish. Enjoyable.
