Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

500ml bottle from ASDA and drunk at home. Very dark brown, opaque with a small beige head. Aroma of cooking chocolate, a little bit of candied orange, some repeater, a bit of coffee grounds. I expected it to be super-sweet. It isn't, but neither does the balance lend it a pleasant quality. It's got some acrid bitterness near the finish that leads to an unfortunate aftertaste. Watery body, high carbonation. Shame, as I thought this might have promise.

Cask at the Olton Tavern. Poured a hazy golden colour with a lasting frothy white head. The aroma is malt, lemon lime citrus fruits. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, malty, juicy citrus, light pepper spice, hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

One of the strangest beers I have consumed. Pour is normal, dark gold with small white head and a little halo retention. Aroma is confectionary pineapple and lactose. Taste starts bitter, then a stewed pineapple (not fresh) kicks in then almost as quick the lactose and vanilla double down in flavour with a background of maltiness. After this the bitterness builds and builds until you can feel it grinding in your stomach but that might just be my metabolism! I like my milkshakes fridge cold but this might not work for milkshake styled beers! Maybe they should point that out on the label. The mouthfeel is far and away the best part as it has quite a thick body and low carbonation which works well with the milkshake style. To be honest I'm not wholly convinced by pineapple with milkyness anyway (even in yogurts) and then combining that with beer- it would take a masterstroke to pull off flavour wise. It was a decent effort, and I don't hate it, but its an unbalanced beer.

Historical tick which I am adding as a rate so that I can see the impact it has on my stats. 500 Beers To Try Before You Die. One of those beers I picked up early on when I hadn't really discovered crafty stuff.

500ml bottle, BBE in 11 months. Pours amber with small white head; fine. Aroma is mainly malt but there is some earthy hops and chocolate coming through but all a bit muted. Taste of malts, grain, nuts, a little spice and quite sweet; nice. Low carbonation but quite smooth which is satisfying. Nice dry bitter finish. Good bitter.

Ok

Bottle. Nose is chocolate, milk chocolate, roast, hint of vanilla, cream. Taste is roast, earthy, bitter leaf, almost sour note, cold filter coffee, more roast. No chocolate, lactose or noticeable sweetness. It's not very good, to the extent I wonder if I have a duff bottle. Rated on what I found.

From bottle on the sun deck of Fridtjofen 26.06.20. Clear golden amber. Persistent off-white head. Fine aroma and taste of sweet pale malt, marmalade and English hops. Very good and drinkable!
