Description
Hop Back Brewery Ltd was formed in October 1991 by John Gilbert and we moved to a small industrial unit in Downton, just south of Salisbury. After refurbishment and installation, brewing on the new 20 barrel plant started in June 1992.

In 2012 Hop Back celebrated its 25th birthday, having retained John’s original philosophy and passion for beers that he would want to drink.

The color is light yellow - probably made light by the maize. It has a fine though collapsing head. The aroma is fresh of oranges, lemon, banana, and malt. The flavor is very light with a hint of sourness - is it the maize? The flavor has notes of lemon, oranges, and corriander. The body is a little thin.

The nose is hoppy. The color is golden and it has a small head. The flavor has a thin start, but then turning nicely hoppy. The only thing bearing this bear thru is the nice hopping - otherwise it is boring.

Brown - dark amber color; no head. Light aroma. Some good roasted malt, but still simple, watery…

Clear golden color. Mild hop aroma. Begins with the taste of a standard German wheat, but then a sour chemical taste. Very little wheat taste at all. Not very good.

A bit hoppy, some malt and traw - also in taste. Lightbodied, somewhat boring.

Bright amber; wheaty, slightly lemony; malty finish. A pretty simple beer that does nothing to change my opinion that this brewery is overrated.

Sampled cask-conditioned at the Cayo Arms, Cardiff...Light amber; earthy, minerally aroma, light caramel, some tin character. Moves into chalkiness on the palate, and a slightly earthy hop finish.
