Description
Hop Back Brewery Ltd was formed in October 1991 by John Gilbert and we moved to a small industrial unit in Downton, just south of Salisbury. After refurbishment and installation, brewing on the new 20 barrel plant started in June 1992.

In 2012 Hop Back celebrated its 25th birthday, having retained John’s original philosophy and passion for beers that he would want to drink.

Handpull cask at the Old Horse, Leicester. Brownish red and very translucent with a thin and fairly tight khaki head. Malty, metallic and slightly smoky aroma. Sweetish smoky taste followed by a strange sourness that persists to the finish. Some resinous malt with strong toffee notes in the aftertaste. It isn't the most amazing beer. There's character somewhere but it takes some digging.

[Cask at the Alehouse, Reading.] A golden amber pour with a thin cream coloured head; bready aroma; light rye taste with a touch of citrus; then a vegetal bitterness with a little chocolate before a dry rye finish. A pleasant mix of flavours.

Brilliant white foamy head left a spotty cover & collar on a clear pale golden coloured body. Grain, newspaper & dull citrus aroma. Medium bodied, dull over the tongue with a lively back. Peach, bubble gum, floral & malt tastes with a bitter herbaceous finish. Easy going.
