Ridiculously deep dark brown coloured body with a large, four centimetre tall deep brown head. A touch of violet gets through at the bottom and is about 90% opaque. Aroma of strong roasted malt, raisins, figs, prunes, vanilla, coffee and chocolate - nice aromas. Medium to Full-bodied; Dense roasted malt flavours with vanilla and oak the strongest tastes, coupled with some milk and brown sugar and finishing with molasses - this is quite strong. Aftertaste is perhaps a bit of a downer with some offensive bitterness from earthy malt, chocolate and a hint of yeast noticeable. Overall, a decent stout, on the border of an imperial stout and also a sweet stout - not great, but nice to sample, especially since this isn’t a common beer for me to see. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Binny’s (South Loop) in Chicago, Illinois on 21-August-2013 for US$8.99 sampled at home in Washington on 09-January-2014. Batch #20

Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a slightly cloudy reddish amber with a half finger of off-white head. Aroma of pine resin with grapefruit and citrus and a very solid malt backbone. Taste is medium bitter. Starts with citrus, grapefruit and mango with a decent toffee and caramel kick in the middle and ends with resinous hops. Full bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a very long finish. Overall, awesome. Every time is have a different beer from these guys I fall a little more in love.

22 oz. bottle from Binny’s, Lincoln Park, Chicago. Batch number 70 hand written on the side of label. Black pour with nice tan head on a slow pour into my Bourbon County Snifter. Lasting head retention. Nose is extremely roasty. Coffee, campfire ash and barley. This stout is balanced nice with long lasting dry roast and bitter pine hops. Bitter sweet chocolate and charred barley upfront with whole pine cones with a light citrus nuance. I’m wondering if they used Simcoe or Cascade hops? No matter what type of hop was used, it works well with this stout. Finely crafted and I really enjoyed it! Can’t wait to sample the other imperial stout I have from this brewer.

Bottle from Artale poured into a shaker. Pours black with a ruby hue and a half finger of light khaki head. Aroma of chocolate and toasty coffee with a hint of something fruity. Taste is light bitter. Very toasty with loads of coffee and dark chocolate. Not a lot of fruit, just a hint. Very well balanced. Full bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a finish that just don’t quit! Overall, awesome. Another home run from spiteful. I’ve yet to have a beer from these guys that is anything less than kick-ass. Keep it up!
