Nice dark foxy-red colour, clear; slight orange-brown head. Fruity nose: sweet cherries, strawberry. Later Port or Marssala - like nose, vineous, alcoholy. Bitter-sweet taste, alternating between a nauseating liquorice sweetness and an outspoken burnt toffee&malt flavour. Fruit is reduced to a jam-like flavour (Japanese cherries-jam?). After a time, one gets accustomed, but I cannot even start to like it. Medium-bodied, diminishing effect by the alcohol, augmented by the jam-fruitiness. After a while, the vineous character from the nose reappears. But the vile burnt liquorice keeps hanging on. I'm sure this beer was on a Mission. For me, it failed. What I mostly blame it for, is for the unfullfilled promesses made by the nose, resulting in a complete unbalance between nose and taste.

[over the years, this has become one of my go-to saisons - much cheaper than dupont, but not as good - I’ll buy this when I don’t want to shell out for that beer - for the money, this is the best saison you can buy] A very subtle beer, with a crisp, champaign-like character. Medium-dry and highly carbonated. Notes of apples and pears, with some spice in the back. Clean, slightly alcoholic finish that isn’t very memorable. A decent beer for the style.

Deep red to ruby color, but lacking much of a head. This has a very raisin and brown sugar aroma and a malty, fruity, spicy (even peppery) taste to it. Plums and grapes make their presense known as well. Crisp, tart, slightly dry finish. A very pleasant belgian ale.

Light cloudy golden color with large head that dissipates almost immediately, v little lacing. Aroma is interesting and complex, light fruit (apple), flowery hops (light), and peppery citrus notes. Flavor is mainly spicy, malt presence is low, only slightly fruity, despite the label's assertion. Spicy, herbal notes dominate, with a dry finish. Palate is light and dry. Overall interesting, moderately complex, esp in the aroma. Not something to savor for a long time...perhaps slightly harsh.

Light amber haziness; aroma of peaches, pears, yeast, allspice, vienna malts; palate shows pepper, pears, balanced nuances of vienna malt and herbal hop.

Re-rate: I guess I forgot to revise my rating in October when we got new supply of this stuff in Toronto, but Hennepin today is so much better than it used to be. The aggressive yeastiness and carbonation has given way to a smooth, rounded ale that has become the brewery's best offering. By taking the yeast down a notch, the spice, malts, and earthy hop undertones blend seemlessly together - a perfect autumn quaffer.

Fruity, firm dubbel, reminiscent of bananas dipped in chocolate, with a dry, yeasty finish.
