About
It all started in 1986. Sure, many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, but much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends.

In July 2014, Harpoon became an employee owned company, with 48% of the company given to employees through the establishment of an ESOP. An E-what? ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is a mechanism by which a company contributes to its employees’ retirement by allocating shares to them which it repurchases…..yadda, yadda, yadda… Here’s what it means: we are employee owned, we are an independent craft brewer, and you bet we’re damn proud of it.

In 2024, Harpoon and Smuttynose merged, forming Barrel One Collective.

12oz can. Doesn't look at all like the beer in the picture. Amber-copper body, foamy off-white body. Quite unappealing amber malts tones, oily and heavy handed. Hop tones are resinous and faded. Clearly not much love put into recipes, this is a rather dreadful beer for a brewery their size.

Copper color with moderate pine tree aroma. Taste is mild-moderate IPA bitterness with a sweet, malty finish. Hops fades quickly.

Pumpkin orange color with a creamy head. Pumpkin pie aroma. Flavor is slightly sweet like a Hefeweizen with a good level of pumpkin pie spice and flavor.

On tap at Granary Tavern. Pours a dark amber with medium beige head that lasts. The aroma is toasted malt and dark fruit. Medium body, raisin, wet biscuit, light bitter finish, good.

12 ounce can from Wine Cellar DePere, 10/12/20. Hazy brown, large creamy brown head, good retention. Aroma of caramel, coffee, pumpkin, cinnamon. Taste is coffee, tea, pumpkin, vanilla, spice. Medium bodied. Decent. I guess this is supposed to be a pumpkin spice latte beer.

12 ounce can from Wine Cellar dePere, 10/11/20. Hazy orange, large foamy white head, good retention. Aroma of sickeningly sweet fruit sugar. Vanilla, white sugar. Hope it tastes better than it smells. Taste is jammy fruits, pine, lemon, perfume. Medium bodied, juicy. Taste better than it smells but this is freaking weird. Good thing the little mixed 4 pack was only $6.99.

I’ll tentatively say this is my favorite of the bunch. Nice raspberry flavor with a lingering sweetness. Works better as an IPA than I expected.
