33cl bottle from Appellation Wines. This beer is themed around some of the modern elements of Scottish culture - tablet is similar to fudge and tonic wine, although originally made in Europe and then fortified by some monks on the south coast of England has 75% of its consumption in Greater Glasgow. It has distinctive notes of vanilla and dried fruits - probably figs. Anyway, to the tasting. This beer pours a very dark chestnut with just a glint of red coming through around the edges. A very generous fawn head so should’ve used ny Westmalle glass. Nose of red fruit possibly redcurrants, in fact it is coming through slightly tart, so maybe even cranberries. This is engulfed in a creamy, smokey malt. The taste is toffee, from the tablet presumably, then a creamy chocolate note follows. I don’t get the smoke on the taste. The palate has a medium to full body, a creamy texture and a sweet but still somehow refreshing in a relative sense. Interestingly, this beer is full of sugar sources but it still comes out at around session strength. However, the residual sweetness isn’t particularly hefty. He also manages to get the bottle conditioned texture I associate with an 8% Belgian. Overall, a lovely beer of individual personality and many dimensions. Not much of the tonic wine on the taste.
