Description
Good ideas often start over beer. Always looking to take a good thing too far, we sat down over a beer (or two) and decided that beer itself was a good idea. Of course, not just some easy-drinking, institutional prole beer, but stuff like the beers we’d had at great bars. In short, we wanted beer with flavor. Complexity. Character. Intensity. Not words found in the mass-market lexicon.

So with a banjo burner, a bunch of industrial-sized kitchen pots and as many buckets as we could find, we jumped in feet first. Once a week, every week. Now, several years later and with a 15 barrel version of said banjo burner and kitchen pots for a brewhouse, we’re befuddling the beer judges and converting the masses. One pint at a time.

Our original brewing system has a long and sordid history befitting our line of beers. It centers on the second-to-last kettle ever built by noted coppersmith Fred Zaft, a handcrafted, solid copper 7-barrel brew kettle originally housed in a nineteenth century bar in San Francisco’s old Italian neighborhood. At one point, the bar had been totally restored to its past glory, replete with a “self-flushing spittoon” under the bar (yes, it was actually a urinal). Unfortunately, we were not able to get the self-flushing spittoon.

If you think our beers tend to cross various lineages, you’ll love tidbits like the fact that in 1951, our current building endured a freight train derailing and plowing into the building. We hope our beer can make that sort of impact on you.

Slightly hazy copper coloured body with a nice two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of grassy and very floral hops with some light caramel and a decent amount of malt. Medium-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal notes with a lot of malt backbone coupled with the good but not bitter hops. Aftertaste shows a nice light hoppy flavour, some light citrus and piney notes and a hit of alcohol and pine to punctuate the flavours. Overall, a nice IPA, but not sublime , still - well worth trying. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan earlier today on 02-August-2013 for US$1.99 ,here in Grosse Ile, Michigan.

On tap at MBGSF 2013. Hazy gold pour with a white head. Fruity pale malt aroma. Flavor of fruity caramel malts. Very evocative of the style, but very tasty at the same time. A good malt liquor! Very impressed.

12 ounce bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy orange amber color with a nice 3 finger dense and fluffy cream colored head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty foamy lacing clings down the glass, with moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, pear, orange peel, banana, clove, bubblegum, wheat, floral, pepper, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, pear, orange peel, banana, clove, bubblegum, wheat, pepper, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of citrus, banana, pear, clove, bubblegum, wheat, pepper, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish fore a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; with a great fruity/spicy ester balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a creamy and moderately crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a really excellent hefeweizen! All around nice balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. Really enjoyed this one; this is one of the better American made Hefeweizens I have had.

33 cl bottle @ home
Aroma is quite heavy lots of resin, pine needles, biscuits, caramel, vanilla, some berries and malty notes. Flavour is somewhat hoppy with woody notes, some resin, pine needles and vanilla. Also a feeling of alcohol. Heavy stuff, more like (imperial) amber ale or American strong ale. Too sweet but works as a slow sipper.

355ml bottle from a trade, thanks cp45!

Pours dark orange with a small white head. Aroma of caramely malts, stingy hops, hints of solvent and grass. Taste is boozy, malty and caramely with notes of syrup, stingy notes and fruits. Finish is hoppy, bitter and sweet with notes of grass, honey and syrup. Sweet but bitter and hoppy DIPA that feels more like a Barley Wine or American Strong Ale.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazed caramel orange with an off-white head. Citrusy, somewhat sweet resinous aroma, maybe some tropical fruit and some spicy note. Flavor has citrus hops and pine balanced with nice, somewhat sweet biscuit and caramel. Certainly quite tasty.

Enjoyed from bottle at Pete's Barber Shop at his 2 year anniversary in Chicago IL. Stuff is good. Appearance very dark brown light off white head. Aroma chocolate and acidic hops, good black IPA smell. Taste is pretty exceptional, rich in chocolate, coffee (espresso) and bitter hops. 6 points?
