Description
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.

The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of yespr. Comes as "König Ludwig Weissbier". Hazy golden with a tall, white head. Distinct yeasty aroma. Medium body, lightly sweet banana and yeast accents - and then basically nothing else but a heavy carbonation. A rather poor Hefe. 140308

(50 cl bottle from grocery store "Hemköp")BB 17-07-08On March 9, 2008Slight shady pale yellow color, huge lasting bubbly white head. Vegetable, mostly cucumber (weird?), some banana and metallic scent. Scent is very weak though. Watery malty taste, some esters. Taste is also very weak. Thin spritzy mouthfeel, low bitterness. Metallic aftertaste.I could imagine having this as a refreshing drink on a summer day if driving, but not as a substitute for a stronger (or better) wheat beer.

Big coarse white head. Opaque hazy light yellow body with floaties. Flat herbal yeasty aroma with mealy tobacco and marzipan notes. Sweetish papery herbal taste with yeasty cardboard and marzipan notes. Feels unclean in the mouth. This was unpleasant. Poured out the rest. (0.5l bottle. BBD 2008-07-17.)

Medium lasting white head. Hazy opaque yellow body. Wheaty citric yeasty aroma, quite mild. Dry mild wheaty yeasty taste with citric notes. Thin, neutral, and watery. Dry chalky papery aftertaste. Not bad, but could be better. (0.5l bottle from gr0ve, shared on the bus to RBNAG’07.)

My bottle says Konig Ludwig Weissbier. Off tart aroma with a strong ale attitude. Rocky thin head, hazy light beige yellow color. Welcomed creamy carbonation. Fine texture. Wheaty flavors that are simple and enjoyable. No bitter taste or linger. Overall a nice example of the style. Unique tho on style!

Bügelverschlußflasche (vielen Dank, Jonas!): Clear, deep brownish-amber coloured, smaller, quite stable tanned head, complex nose: banyuls-vinous, dark-fruity (berries) and chocolatey nose; stronger sweet, slightly bitter flavour, full bodied; dark-malty, dark-fruity finish with traces of cacao, supporting hops in the aftertaste. Good, complex brew, not cloying at all...........

(33cl swing top bottle) Clear, dark brown colour with a short beige foamy head. Strong malty, moderately roasted aroma, melanoidinic with caramel, spices, herbal notes and a slightly vinous fruit character of dried berries and plums. Sweet flavour, full bodied, pleasant and soft mouthfeel. Robust roast-malty, caramelly and subtle fruity taste; long lasting, moderately sweet and roasty finish, almost vinous with a balancing level of bitterness. Well-done.
