Description
The Hopfs – one brewery family, one passion, one Lang – since 1853.

The beginnings of the Schönbrunn brewery go back to the year 1831, when the officials of the margrave granted permission to innkeepers Schmidt, Zeitler und Rasp to set up a community brewhouse, with a reference to the especially advantageous properties of the water in Schönbrunn. The oldest advertising signs and letterheads that have been found point to 1853 as the year of founding. At that time the three founding families of Zeitler, Rasp and Schmidt held the main shares in the brewery. A real „Lang“ only appears as a partner in the Schönbrunn brewery from 1883 in the form of Friedrich Gustav Lang.

In 1888 Gustav Lang built the present head office of Lang-Bräu. After the early death of Rudolf Lang (1937) his widow Frida Lang took over the brewery and farming operations and guided them both through the confusion of the war and post-war times. From 1948 Frida Lang was given strong support from Ernst Hopf, who married her daughter Irma Lang that same year. The brewmaster worked intensively on the brewery and brought it up to its present modern state.

We are among the leading private breweries of Upper Franconia with an annual output in five digits (in hectolitres). We have set our course for the future by our investment in a new filling unit. It this way it is possible for us to ensure the unique and unsurpassed quality of our beers even as demand rises.

Test vom 5.3.2006, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 8,8,10,6,4,6 - 7,00

Bottled. Clear golden, creamy head. Aroma of sugar and buttery malt. Very sweet and very soft with near full body. There’s some grassy hops and some alcohol, medium bitterness. Too sweet to be balanced.

Bockbier. Stinknormales Bockbier. Vielleicht am Anfang etwas würziger und unstimmiger als Artgenossen, ansonsten durchschnittlich wie nur irgend möglich. Test vom 28.10.2005, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,7,7,8,8,8 - 8,10

Dark red-ish amber colour. Dense head. The aroma is chocolate-y and a bit sour. The flavour is slightly malty with sour notes of black currant. Bitter finish. A bit thin.

Bottle: Amber coloured, fluffy brownish head; distinctive nose: coffee, roasted malts, molasses; mild fruity-malty taste, neither sweet or dry; slightly bitter-malty finish, with a tinge of chocolate; slightly sourish aftertaste. Not great, but pleasant.

This bottle had a rather funny gimmick: The main etiket is printed mostly upside down in order to get people to shake the yeast loose - it is a good idea to wait a second after that before opening the bottle. Big fluffy head, cloudy yellow - the yeast has not completely dissolved though. Aroma is mostly spices: Clove, a bit chili and vanilla. Yeasty, wheaty flavor as a base, vanilla on top. Light body and fresh mouthfeel. Average wheat.

Pineneedle aroma (or am I under influence of the picture on the bottle?), fruity malt as well. Golden, lowish head and carbonation. Good nourishing malt base with a fine broad hop profile on top (grassy notes) - very pleasant. Full, slightly oily mouthfeel which would benefit from a well-lagered fine carbonation.
