Description
Four lifelong Oregonians got together on February 13, 2009 and decided that their knowledge of locale and understanding of craft beer could be an excellent starting point for a business. Later that year Hop Valley Brewing had its debut in Springfield, Oregon, but grew too large for its 15-barrel capacity and opened a new 60-barrel brewhouse and taproom in Eugene in 2013. In July 2016 MillerCoors acquired a majority stake of Hop Valley through its Tenth and Blake craft beer and import division. Hop Valley Brewing Company will operate as a separate business unit of Tenth and Blake.

12oz can pours with a clear deep gold body that has a copper core and supports a light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up pine hops, malt nuanced grassy hoppiness and a faint herbal and orange candy note. The taste delivers bitter near resiny pine hops, bitter floral hops, a dash of grapefruit and then thin citrus hop flavor juiciness. A few more sips and mild earthy kind of tea like hop notes come weakly to the surface. This has loads of hoppiness being bitter forward and not letting up right into the finish. I like it.

Bottle from the Boise Co-Op... maybe it was Brewer’s Haven (it’s been in the beer fridge for a couple months). Had on eclipse day, went light beer then dark... out of sheer nerdiness. Dark dark brown pour with a thick finger of creamy brown head. Aroma is huge with roast and sweet chocolate malts. Lots of sweet chocolate flavors with a deep roast and oatmeal creaminess. A little bittersweet in the end. Really struck a chord with me as an excellent example of a classic stout. Quite nice overall.

473ml can. Pours a hazy medium orange with tiny particles floating around and a large, frothy, long lasting, white head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of pale malt, grapefruit, peach, tropical fruit and floral. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, grapefruit peel, orange peel, tropical fruit, pine resin and a dry, bitter grass finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty.

On Tap Clear deep golden with a litel orange. Thin brief white head. Standard light lager but a litel more sweet and not so dry. Plain light pale malt flavors and a bit under hopped....even for the style

Bottle - hazy orange - this brewery seems solid on the IPA front, and this is not really any different - soft mouthfeel, nice texture - flavorful and aromatic hop character, rich in citrus - the addition of the grapefruit, however, makes it a bit too bitter on the tail end.

Can - excellent IPA - assertively bitter, citric, resinous, without being abrasive - probably one of the smoothest higher ibu IPAs I’ve come across, which truly makes it shine, even in a sea of pretty dang good ipas - I’ll certainly be buying more.
