Description
Brouwerij Sterkens has a particularly rich and very tasteful history. In 1651, the Sterkens family began to brew their own beer out of interest. In that time, they were local farmers with small amount of money to brew some quantities. As they were brewing, they wrote down every single detail of the recipes they made and the way they produced the beer. These notes were given from father to son, for generations on. When the family noticed that brewing beer gradually got more priority than working on the farm, they chose to professionalize the brewery and to fill out more quality beers. The delicious and spicy St. Sebastiaan and St. Paul beers were well appreciated in Belgium, what led to the fact that Brouwerij Sterkens was one of the first breweries who went abroad for exportation.

The current 14th generation of Brouwerij Sterkens have ensured that the beers of Sterkens are appreciated in more than 30 countries on all 5 continents. The Sterkens family is looking to the near future with a lot of enthousiasm and confidence, without forgetting the past. After all, Brouwerij Sterkens is still bottling their beers in distinctive and exceptional packaging.

Sterkens did stop with brewing and became a client brewer in 2008.

0,25L bottle. Pours clear straw with white head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is some malt and garlic. Flavor is very watery, somewhat sweet, malt, garlic. Carbonation is very high. Overall: it’s just horrible.

Tripel-style ’kruikenbier’ by Sterkens, peach blond with fruity and lightly malty sweetness next to a certain yeastiness and mild herbal hops in the finish; I was a bit bothered by the thin, almost watery mouthfeel though, an ale this strong should have a lot more body. Not impressed.

One of Sterkens’ ’kruikenbieren’, dark brown, malty, sweet and yeasty with some complexity, but a bit thin body, like most of the Sterkens ales.

16 ounce ceramic bottle into tulip glass, best before 4/12/2017. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon zest, orange peel, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, honey, biscuit, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt sweetness; with solid strength. Taste of lemon zest, orange peel, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, honey, biscuit, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon/orange zest, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, honey, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance and fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a crisp malt/yeast spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly prickly/dry mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming well after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Belgian strong pale ale. All around good complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

The tripel in this series, either from a stone pitcher or from a beautifully shaped, elegant, unusual bottle. Golden blonde, clear robe, sweet character, a bit sugary, malt sweetness with subdued fruitiness, some aromatic hops in the finish but some residual sweetness as well. Unusual tripel but like the dubbel in this series, lacks body.

Bottle bought at the Achelse Kluis, where the Achel trappist ales are made. Dryish, caramelly dubbel with restrained fruity character and some roasted bitterness, bit cliché and a bit thin mouthfeel for the style, metallic too. But the bottle was very nice. Also tasted under the alias Sint-Truiden Markt.
