Description
Traquair House is the oldest inhabitat house in Scotland and dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair House Brewery lies in the wing of the house directly underneath the Chapel. It dates back to the early 1700’s and was originally a domestic brewery serving the house and the estate. It was disused in the early 1800’s but never dismantled. It gradually filled with the family junk until it was completely forgotten.
Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960’s and began brewing again as an experiment in 1965 using all the original equipment and fermenting the ales in the original oak tuns, some of which were over 200 years old. In 1990, following Peter’s death, his daughter, Catherine, took over the running of the brewery and it was expanded in 1994. Traquair employs 2 full time brewers and its rich dark ales are now exported all over the world although production remains tiny at only 1,000 hectalites a year.

Sample (thanks omhper!). Copper colour, small off-white head. Aroma is sweet dried fruits, some syrupy tones with some alcohol sweetness and mild liquorice to it. Flavour is chocolate, syrup, dried fruits, mild alcohol sweetness with some caramel tones too. A bit on the sweet side, but still really nice. Mild bitterness kicking in in the finish.

Somehow I've never had this! It probably would've been cheaper in Scotland. Very interesting flavor, not so much the coriander itself but of everything together. This brewery has two full fridges of different dark beers. Would that I had time and money.

Bottle(s) from Misty Bottle, Skype. It pours clear deep ruby with a bubbly beige head. The aroma is rich malt, malt loaf, molasses, toasty malts, umami, liquorice allsorts, dark and dried fruits, cherry, fig, blackcurrant jam, raisin, sultana and toasty fruit cake. The taste is dry and toothy, bitter - sweet character, toasty grain, kick of alcohol, booze soaked fruit cakes, raisin, sultana, cherry, fig, splash of Dr Pepper, blackcurrant jam spread thickly on toast, dry oak, touch of toasted nut, spice, fortified wine, hint of umami and liquorice allsorts with a smooth, fruity & toasty finale. Fulsome body, average carbonation and soft, velvety mouth feel. Nice depth and lovely balance. Eminently drinkable.

330ml bottle @Abc Thai, Vardø w/Karo & Kriston. Tawny clear body, ring at the rim of the glass. Roasted malts and coffee, anise, plum, dark berries, oak. Very inviting nose. Dark fruits, roasted malts, liquorice, chestnut and coriander, hint of yeast in finish. Anticipated a fuller body. Last bottle at Abc Thai in Vardø – what a (catholic) blessing!
