Description
Traquair House is the oldest inhabitat house in Scotland and dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair House Brewery lies in the wing of the house directly underneath the Chapel. It dates back to the early 1700’s and was originally a domestic brewery serving the house and the estate. It was disused in the early 1800’s but never dismantled. It gradually filled with the family junk until it was completely forgotten.
Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960’s and began brewing again as an experiment in 1965 using all the original equipment and fermenting the ales in the original oak tuns, some of which were over 200 years old. In 1990, following Peter’s death, his daughter, Catherine, took over the running of the brewery and it was expanded in 1994. Traquair employs 2 full time brewers and its rich dark ales are now exported all over the world although production remains tiny at only 1,000 hectalites a year.

33 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a deep redish hue and diminished light tan head. Plum fruity aroma. Mild malt, caramel and minor liqourice note too. Flavour is roasted malt with chocolate smoothness and bitterness. Light bitter and liqourice like bite following. Growing overripe fruity plum notes which gives reminiscence of Belgian trappist brews like Westmalle, Rochefort and a bit of St Sixtus. Dry yeasty spiced finish with a lingering fruit note. Nice one.

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Deep ruby red with a slight white head. Aroma of dark fruit, toffee, liquorice and spice. Big mouth feel, starting sweet in flavour with plenty of fruit, demerara sugar, nuts and spice. Capped off with a decent dry finish. Very enjoyable.

Bottle pours a deep dark brown, with a vanishing off white head. Rich aroma with notes of coffee, chocolate , grape, mollasess. Smooth and full bodied , packs a big heavy, and complex taste. The spiciness entwined with the alcohol is lingering and very warmly satisfying. Lovely to sip indoors with the snow falling outside as it is now. Top notch jock brew.

Bottled (BB 03/2017)
Clear ruby red color, small brown head. Strong nose: vanilla/fudge, licorice and raisins. Liquerish and port wine -like palate. Flavor is not quite what I expected after delicious nose. Very metallic flavor, some vanilla fudge and raisins. Ageing might help here, now just too simple (especially for being Traquair-brew).

Very dark copper colour with a lasting off-white head. Delicate toasted malt aroma, with some dark dried fruits in play. Malty sweet flavour with dried fruit, and a dark malt and hop bitterness that barely balances the sweetness. Vineous and rich sweetness
