Sample @ Zythos’16, courtesy of and shared with the RB Belgian crew.

Commissioned beer from a new beer company instigated by the famed Marc Knops, the man behind brews by Domus, Loterbol and even the Achel trappists - from a man with such a record of achievement, I expect a near perfect tripel. Lacing, beaten egg-white, moussy, well-retaining head over an initially lightly hazy, misty, orangey peach blonde beer with pinkish hue and vivid sparkling, turning a completely cloudy ochre blonde with deposit. Aroma of dried apricot, damp earth, fried egg, pink pepper, raw potato, dough, red apple, banana but not so much in the dreadful bubblegum way, old straw, raw carrot, orange, honey, yellow passion fruit. Crisp, spritzy onset with fruity esters abounding but not in an uncontrolled manner, hints of banana, gooseberry, passion fruit and peach, in all a bit cliché for the style, sweet with a sourish undertone and fairly sharp carbonation; supple, lean, slightly oily, sweetish bready malt body ensues while the esters persist and outspoken ’Belgian yeast spiciness’ shows up (clove-like phenols), leading to a mildly drying finish of earthy, spicy hops, ongoing malt sweetness, spicy phenols and fruity esters and - expectedly - quite a lot of gin- or wodka-like alcohol warmth, a bit fatiguing in the end, but managing to stay non-astringent. Very decently made tripel indeed, but utterly stereotypical. There are already way too many tripels in this country as it is, do we really need another one? Though well-crafted, this is so generic that it adds literally nothing to the existing tripel population in Belgium. By itself, though: enjoyable enough. If you are not yet fed up with all those redundant tripels, that is.
