Description
Gageleer was born out of a combined passion for beer and nature. Gageleer desires to brew beer using a traditional, historical ingredient, employing state-of-the-art brewing techniques that satisfy the demands of the modern consumer. Gageleer is a beer with the taste of the land where it is born: bog myrtle from nature, and barley from fully organic agriculture.

Around 1980, a desire for a beer brewed `to medieval tastes´ led us to the Cruydeboeck (“Book of Herbs”) by Belgian botanist and physician Rembert Dodoens (1517–1585). The road to actually realizing this desire was long, but following a detour through a (then) small Walloon brewery in 1988 we arrived at our first “garage beer” in Beerse (province of Antwerp). On 23 November 1996, the “Proef” brewery in Lochristi bottled the first 1,000 liters of Gageleer. In 1997, five members of De Wielewaal nature society raised the capital to found a co-operative, with the goal of marketing a beer to fund the purchase and conservation of nature reserves in the Campine.

Bottle. It pours a hazy, orange body topped by a nice, off-white head. The aroma is flowery and gingery, rather boring, but far from bad. It’s a tad better than the flavor, which is sweet and fruity with flowers and a certain acidic touch. Lemony hops towards the finish. Medium body, nice carbonation level. I like it, but it’s too special to be a favorite. 100326

33cl bottle @ DHVL. Pours a cloudy golden with a large white head. Yeast and spices. Bog-Myrtle and ginger feel all over. Reminds me of De graal Gember. One dimensional but well made.

Great looking dark gold beer with thick tight head. Aroma is very strong. It has a medicinal edge to it caused by the gale/gagel. That comes through in the flavour too. Overall it is dominated too much by the herbs.

Bottle from Dranken Geers. Hazy orange gold. Thin lasting white head. Spicy floral aroma. Definitely got something flowery or herby added to it. It’s got a real tinned peach flavour, crazy bizarre and tasty. I’m not a big fan of these perfumed beers, but this is good. Actually it does become a bit annoying.
