Around 1980, a desire for a beer brewed `to medieval tastes´ led us to the Cruydeboeck (“Book of Herbs”) by Belgian botanist and physician Rembert Dodoens (1517–1585). The road to actually realizing this desire was long, but following a detour through a (then) small Walloon brewery in 1988 we arrived at our first “garage beer” in Beerse (province of Antwerp). On 23 November 1996, the “Proef” brewery in Lochristi bottled the first 1,000 liters of Gageleer. In 1997, five members of De Wielewaal nature society raised the capital to found a co-operative, with the goal of marketing a beer to fund the purchase and conservation of nature reserves in the Campine.

Bottle to tulip. Lavender, spice and camomile. Hazy orange with full white head. Sweet lemongrass and wheatfield after a threshing. Moderate bitterness and spice. Semi-dry finish.

I do appreciate a spicey beer, even with obscure spices and herbs. But this one just didn’t work for me. It had a nasty tardy taste. Blech.

Bottle 0,75cl. Piwo mimo niskiej zawartosci alkoholu udeza do glowy. Minus za korek syntetyczny.

33 cl. bottle @ home, gift from my parents. Hazy golden with a white head. Herbal aroma of what must be the gagel plant. Spicy taste with some good bitterness. Something different.

Note: this is pretty weird. I was sure I had rated this beer long ago. More even: I've had it on several occasions, and did not take notes, because I thought I had already rated it.
Clear orange beer, aery off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet, honey, sugary, spices, sweet malts, fruity touch, orange peel. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, citrus, grains, bread, bitter touch. Aftertaste: orange peel, alcohol sweetness, little bitter, honey, bready, sugar.

Bottle at home, this rating is more for my own list, I have had this beer earlier this year before I started taking notes. What I remember: different beer than others, nice.

33 cl bottle @ Gastropub Tuulensuu. Rated on 14.08.2010
Aroma is surprisingly light with herbs and floral notes. Flavour is a bit unpleasant with harsh bitterness and strong herbs (probably the Bog Myrtle himself). No wonder they use hops nowadays…

33cl Bottle from an organic shop. Slightly hazy golden colour, white head. Aroma of alcohol, gale, which has a cardamon/ginger character, quite herbal, and like Plaas said, reminds me a lot of Jopen Koyt, a gruyt-beer. Flavour is light to medium sweet, alcohol, light fruity, lots of gale/cardamon, floral and herbal, bitter malty and alcohol finish. Medium-bodied. Decent stuff, quite nice actually.

drank a 33 cl bottle at hevig hoekske ( antwerp) the metal edition gageleer ( same beer, same producer, diffrent label ) . the beer is blond, maybe just a litle bit to much carbonation, but not way to much. flavour is more common, but just a little more spiced , herbs,.. its a nice beer
