Around 1980, a desire for a beer brewed `to medieval tastes´ led us to the Cruydeboeck (“Book of Herbs”) by Belgian botanist and physician Rembert Dodoens (1517–1585). The road to actually realizing this desire was long, but following a detour through a (then) small Walloon brewery in 1988 we arrived at our first “garage beer” in Beerse (province of Antwerp). On 23 November 1996, the “Proef” brewery in Lochristi bottled the first 1,000 liters of Gageleer. In 1997, five members of De Wielewaal nature society raised the capital to found a co-operative, with the goal of marketing a beer to fund the purchase and conservation of nature reserves in the Campine.

Lichte body. Prima N/A.

Bottle from Wine Raks, Aberdeen. It pours fairly clear golden - blonde with a decent white head. The aroma is toasty grains, nutty, cereal, wood, sweet biscuit, doughy malt, grass, herbal accents and some white sugar. The taste is crisp, dry, snappy, bitter - sweet, herbal, green veg, leafy, damp grass, biscuit, oat cake, sponge cake, white bread, muted alcohol presence and white sugar with a green, herbal finale. Average body and moderate+ foamy carbonation. A pretty interesting offering. Drinks fine, but definitely rather green and also sweet. Not sure I would rush back though.

330ml bottle @ De Blankaart after a sunny birdwatching walk. Pours a lightly misty deep mahogany with voluminous beige head. Aroma is pleasantly sweet with an inviting toffee tone. Flavour profile continues the caramelised toffee, some dark candy rock suggestions, smooth palate. Hit the spot. Went well with spotting a Black Bellied Plover.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is quite herbal with gale herb, nettles, clove, spiced notes, touch of citrus, vegetables, yeast, malt. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet and mildly bitter. Body is medium. Very herbal, but not bad, okay herbal beer.

Bottle from a local bottle shop. Aroma is sweet brown malt with spices, caramel, herbs, medicinal notes. Flavour is rather sweet with a light bitterness. Body is medium. Bit too much with the sweetness and spice/herb overload.

Donkerbruin bier wat direct bij openen omhoog komt maar weinig schuim produceert. Smaak is bitterzoet met iets van anijs, gember, speculaas en drop. Best goed.

Bottle. Clear light golden. Sweet maltsz honeyz wort, wheat, 'gagel'. The herbs are more subtle than in the various alcoholic versions, it's well balanced with the base beer here. Light bitter. It's obviously a non alcoholic beer, but the herbs add something here and overall it's really not bad.

Very pale blond colour, white foam. Sweet and floral, herbal with bitter hoppy notes, lively carbonation. Not very bad.
