Description
When good friends Ray Ashworth and David Crease got tired of the same old beers, they were determined to change things up a level. With a passion for homebrewing and creating authentic flavours, they became part of a new-wave revolution, handcrafting their own beers in the 1960s.

In 1981 they founded their own brewery near Norwich and moved to a converted farm complex in the picturesque Broadland village of Woodbastwick in 1989

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial rooms, Bristol 24/10/10. Copper with a slight, off-white head. Sweet aroma of caramel and floral hop. Flavour started sweet with a touch of earthiness, before a hoppy, bitter finish. Good.

Cask, handpump, The Penny Black, JDW, Bicester, Oxon 24.10.10 Pours copper in colour, very good looker, white head atop. Very decent straightforward session beer, really likeable, my only criticism is that it is served just a tiny bit too cold but otherwise for a JDW it;’s in excellent nick, not getting too much on the nose but the coldness maybe partly to blame. Tastewise it’s very simple, nicely bitter, not too sweet, bit drying at end, good hoppy bitter but with the hops not dominating, got to be honest I was surprised to see Motueka and Nelson Sauvin in here, thought it tasted very British. Cask@GBBF2010. Orangeish amber colour with small slightly off-white head. Aroma is bready and caramelly malty along with some slight fruityness, sap, wood and mild syrupy notes as well. Flavour is quite similar, but has a very nice underlying bitterness, which gives the beer a nice kick in the finish. Smooth and pleasant.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm, 1 June 2010) Dark brown colour with a reddish hue, creamy beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dried fruit, caramel, raisins, chocolate and coffee. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, wood, raisins, chocolate and a slight acidity with hints of red berries. Smooth bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, well rounded mouthfeel. Fairly sweet. Nice and well balanced old ale.

[Cask at the Vernon Arms, Southrepps, Norfolk] Slightly hazy golden-amber with a moderate white head and a slight fizz. Light refreshing lemony flavour gets a little dull by the end of the pint. A very one-dimensional beer, which nevertheless would probably compliment seafood rather well (which is after all what it was designed for).
