Established in 1536
Generation.

Bottled BB 12/2006. Clear copper brown, not much head. Sweet malty aroma, very faint hints of smoke. Sweetish, crisp lager, diacetylic-like toffee notes. Grassy hops and hints of smoke in the aftertaste.

Bottled. Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is salts, smokey and leathery. Flavour is leather, smoke and malts. Like a Schlenkerla on water and animal fur.

On draught at Spezial in September, 2006. Orange/golden color, cloudy. The aroma is banana, wheaty and yeasty with a touch of smoke. The banana flavor is very strong as well, with a slight smokiness.

Bottle - Bruxellensis Festival. Lovely clear deep amber colour, thin beige head. Smokey aroma, bit of bacon. OK in mouth, some candy sugar, then more subtle smoked bacon on end. Not as good as some other rauchs I’ve had. 3.2 nope no idea what that rating was for. This is from bottle near deep black dark ruby with lasting tan head. Bottle at Spezial Gasthaus Bamberg. Charcoal smoke aroma. Some dark malt on aroma. Yes more smoke some charcoal jn the mouth. Never ashy though. Juicy. Dark fruits. Like burnt raisins. A level of heavy charcoal continues. Some light smoke. For a heavy beer. Its quite light in mouthfeel and finish. Lovely beer.

(Bottle 50 cl) Hazy, amber golden colour with a nice, dense, off-white head. Aroma of wheat, but not really the usual banana esters. Medium-bodied with some lightly sweet and soft notes. Some phenol. The smokiness is just a vague edge appearing as the beer warms. 040906

Yellow-brownish tinted, huge (and badly poured in the wrong glass) over yellow orange beer, that needs vigourous shaking to losen the yeast. Smokey, with a marked wheat vector, that makes it surprisingly carbolic. Bit of clove, but the carbolic impression dominates. The taste has way more wheat than smokiness (compare this to the Schlenkerla Lager!). There’s even such a small sourish edge, probably the wheat, but because of the rauchmalt, it acquired a porter/stout character. Still quite some restsweetness, pineapple juice-like. Very slick, creamy MF; well bodied. More proof, if any needed; I do NOT like the combination of wheat with: smoke, lot of hops, alt,...)o

Beautiful red-chestnut ot bernstein colour; medium, amberish head. Restrained smokiness, bready, chestnuts-in-the-ashes. Quite restrained overall, really; some parsley (aroma often associated with amber malts). Sweet-roasted main taste, slowly acquiring some smoked dimension. All very gradually, but retronasal the beer acquires a great fulness, sweet, but not anywhere cloying. No typical ham smokiness - smoked cake? Full bodied, slick, grist, ever so slightly adstringent. The main thing about this beer it the absolute fulfilling, gratifying, well-boding feeling it gives; whereas it is nowhere as imposing or outspoken as a Schlenkerla - but o, how balanced.

(Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm, 2 Sep) Colour is amber, slightly hazy, with a huge white head. Fresh wheat character in the nose, notes of banana and hints of smoke. Taste is rather fruity with wheat, banana, smoked ham, ripe apples and plums. Rather short finish. Refreshing but rather average.
