Description
Arthur Van den Bossche founded the brewery in 1897. After his death in 1925, Elenora Callebaut, Arthur's wife and daughter of the Callebaut brewers and chocolatiers family, continued the brewery. In 1935 Willy and Mark Van den Bossche, the 2nd generation, take the helm and further expand the brewery. Ignace son of Mark Van den Bossche, 3rd generation, becomes active in the brewery in 1976. In 2015 Bruno Van den Bossche takes over the brewery from his father. The 4th generation is now taking the lead.

Cloudy golden with large white head. Sweet fruity and yeasty aroma with light apple notes. Sweet aroma with orange peel, peach, coriander and yeasty notes. Warming alcohol in the end.

(3/6/08) Bottle at Kaffee de Hopduvel in Ghent. Dark brown to black, bot opaque, with a medium beige head. Aroma of some roasted malt and yeast. A rather sweet flavor with some roastiness, notes of yeast and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Nice.

Draught @ Zythos Bier Festival 2008, Sint Niklaas, Belgium. Clear light to light medium yellow orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, light hoppy, light yeasty. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. (010308)

Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, coffee, light alcohol. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. (010308)

The bottle looks good, the beer in the glass also. Very fine foam. The taste is disappointing - very washy - like a very old beer. Finish very vapid, a little bit malty. Not a good beer!

ZBF2008: From tap. Pours clear and golden yellow to orange with a dense and chalk white head. Light spiced aroma. Flavour holds a mild caramel base with a nice spice note. Light yeasty mellow smoothness throughout. Ends much the same way with a mild bitterness showing up.

25 cL bottle as Den Hert. Pours clear and golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is toasted malty and light fruity. Grassy and straw. Bitter and slight herbal. Dry and bitter, light conrish finish.

ZBF2008: From tap. Pours dark brown to black with a dense tan head. Spiced and roasted malt aroma. Flavour is spiced, annis seed, light coffee note and a smooth chocolate note into the finish. Ends with a smooth mouthfeel and a light lingering annis seed flavour.

RB BE #600: ZBF2008: From tap. Pours dark brown with a collapsing tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and light spiced. Flavour starts with a mild spice note and gains some light bitterness from the roasted malt. Light acidic note into the finish. Mild bitterness from the roasted malt.
