Birra Menabrea is part of the history of beer in Italy. Founded in 1846 by Mr. Welf di Gressoney and the brothers Antonio and Gian Battista Caraccio, in 1854 the brewery was rented to Giuseppe Menabrea and Antonio Zimmermann, who bought it in 1864. Following the exit of Zimmermann from the company, it was Giuseppe Menabrea who set up the 6 July 1872 "G. Menabrea and sons". At the head of the brewery is Carlo Menabrea until, in 1896, the company passed into the hands of Emilio Thedy and Augusto Antoniotti, husbands of the Menabrea sisters. From that moment on, the Thedy family will lead the company.
In 1991, the company became part of the Forst Beer Group. However, Birra Menabrea retains its strong identity and independence intact. Since 2005 the director is Franco Thedy, the fifth descendant of the family. In 2017, Franco Thedy gave the go-ahead for the expansion of the Brewhouse with advanced features and a spectacular visual impact. Inauguration is scheduled for March 2019.

(660 ml bottle purchased at "Ego & Green" in Helsingør, Denmark) Clear brown color, big but fast dissipating tan head. Sweet malty and sugar scent. Sugary and sweet malty taste. A bit thin mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Vegetable aftertaste.

As Birra della Storia - Il Compagno (Stalin) and shared with ozujsko (thanks!) Poured a big thick fluffy white head. Chemicals ftw, eh ? Golden colour, lively carbonation. The nose is a bit stale, malty and honey with hints of wine. The taste is... bad. Cardboard, hints of grapes, some hops, a bit oily, but somehow... dry. Almost mouthpuckeringly so. Yet another crappy gimmick beer. How nice.

33 cl green bottle from Binny’s. No date on this one, but there’s a pretty skunky pour. Pale lager color under a thick bubbly head. Skunkiness dwindles once it has room to breath. Taste is immediately corny, with a little note of biscuity or Pilsner malt. Some fusels, too. Really can’t dwell on this too long, though it shows traces of having been more interesting if it were only fresh.

(Sample #3 [bottled] at the first Biertest-Online Gathering, Düsseldorf, 29.12.06) Clear, pale golden colour with a short foamy white head. Sweetish and grainy nose, shy herbal hops with a touch of grass. Moderately sweet and slightly bitter flavour, light bodied, medium carbonation. Grainy, slightly corny and papery taste; sweet-bitter finish with traces of grassy, metallic hops. Uninspiring brew, but still drinkable.
