Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Spencer are the only American Trappist brewery and I hear they even make NEIPA! Glad I can finally try some I think Konishi imports them to Japan. Spencer Trappist Ale 6.5% This smells great like a classic Belgian beer: peppery, bready, honey and fruity. Full bodied with a round carbonation and rich fruity flavor with clove and sweet honey notes. Bang on.

0.355l bottle. Almost totally black body with a very thin pearl head. Aroma and taste of chocolate, licorice, figs, plums, caramel and brandy. It also has a bit of roasted malt character. Strong, but nice.

Bottle $2 from vintage. Heheh, bottle looks like its from euro. Nonchalant aroma. Slight haze on pale. Tastes a lot stronger than expected for a 4.7%. Yes lots of odd astringent dull pilz bite in this, almost seems aged and date code says confirmed 11/9/17, so I know its old, HAH. I'd say this is actually not a pilz. Maybe a keller beir? Says its well deserved too. Different kind of pils fer sher. Non bad for how old this lager is.

11/5/19: Slight gusher. Malty and moderately heavy. Pretty bitter for a quad, with something like dried fruit in the back, subtle sweetness. Maybe a tad thin, and too much carbonation for me, but otherwise a very good attempt. Malty, slight spice.

13/7/22: BBE 21.06.19. Slight slow gusher. Pours a dark copper with a fine tan head. Smells malty, some dried fruit, bit of herbal. Soft body, slightly boozy, soft carbonation. Taste is nicely complex, malty, leathery, dry, dried fruits. Aged very nicely!

0.355l bottle. Murky orange body with floating sediments and a thin white head. Aroma and taste of biscuit, pine, tangerine, apricot and some floral notes. The bitterness in the finish lasts long. Nice one.

opalescent dark mahogany colour, minimal beige-ish head, which disappears quickly leaving back only some minimal lacing; aroma of herbal liqueur, licorice, burnt sugar, some (burnt) honeycom toffee, soy sauce, raisins, prune, slight ash and dark chocolate notes; taste has basically the same notes...a bit Imperial stout-ish quadrupel - anyway, it's quite good!
