Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Fles gekocht in BelgiΓ«, thuis geprobeerd met Inoven en BartvG. Het een donkerbruin zwart bier. Het heeft een gebrande moutige geur. De smaak is gebrand, moutig en een beetje koffie achtig.

12 oz bottle purchased as a single at Hyde Park Wine and Spirits in Cincinnati, Ohio. Best By 11/9/17. The pour is a chill haze yellow golden with small to no white head. The aroma is clove herbal yeast, floral and a hint of honey malt. The taste is honey malt, along with the herbal spice yeast. The palate is medium bodied with soft to low carbonation and a straw herbal finish. Got a little weird tasting as it warms. Just OK.

330ml bottle @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours hazy mahogany, small well-appointed foamy pale tan head. Aroma has light dark fruits with a certain malty caramel sweetness. Taste is well-balanced, lightly spicy, with a moreish dark fruit sweetness and soft chocolate emerging on the finish. Fair carbonation that could be turned down a little. Perhaps more chocolatey than other quads, but easy-going and pleasant enough.

750ml bottle from Silpo (thx, Vlad!) at Brian's office. Pours a very dak brown with a beige head. Aroma is fruity, roasted malt. Similar taste with quite bitter roasted malt aftertaste. An ok.

Bottle - Sweet dark and malty. Lots of cocoa. Jet brown with a small light brown head. Lots of cocoa and some toasty notes. A bit thin for what it is.

Dark brown, with a medium brown. Cocoa, toasty, and actually a bit thin for the style. Ok, but thin and without a ton of complexity.

750mL bottle, pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma is loaded with Belgian yeast and medium toasted malt. Flavour is pretty light on the roasted malt, with lots of Belgian yeast, and bready notes. Not a conventional impie - the Belgian yeast really changes this. Not a huge fan, but it's okay.
