Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out anise, nutmeg, Belgian yeast, and candied sugar. Flavour is loaded with anise and nutmeg, with candied sugar and Belgian yeast. Spicy and appropriately sweet. I kind of like the spices here, even if it's not really my thing generally. Good stuff.

355 ml. bottle split with 90 @ Beerlovers Bar. BBF 09 MAY 2019. Dark brown, creamy tanned some mocha head. Nose is what it should be dark fruit in BE fashion with spice, clove, lively but sadly it is also a bit too soapy. Carbonation is too high & the whole feels a bit thin & soap dominates heavily the taste, afterwards you get herbs, cloves, cloves, cardamom, BE dark fruit those parts are proper but the soap, bit empty taste, higher carbonation ruins. It has some of the proper elements that you would expect but a lot of stuff that brings it down, unfortunately it winds up feeling like something that could be tuned to a great beer but it isn’t. You could expect something a bit more robust at this ABV.

750ml bottle. Black colour with average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, tan head. Chocolately, dark malty and piney, fruity, and slightly grassy, hoppy aroma, notes of dark chocolate, hints of coffee, fruit flavoured dark chocolate, woody hints of coniferes, some grassy spiciness. Taste is sweet-ish dark malty, notes of chocolate, dark chocolate, some coffee, a touch of caramel, hoppy counterpart with resinous, piney, grassy and slightly fruity notes, hints of mandarine and orange; creamy texture, smooth and soft palate. Not overly rich, but well balanced, highly drinkable, with Black IPA borrowings.

Bottle, 330 ml at Svijet Piva. Pours hazy yellow, medium white head. Vague hops, some citrus notes, apricot, some marmalade, caramel malts, sweet. Medium bodied. I think this has been sitting on a shelf for too long.

Bottle at Beerlovers Bar. Pours dark brown, small white head. Smell is very clove-forward. Mild caramel, earthy notes. Taste is bit bitter, full, creamy, caramel, cloves, some chocolate. Mild gingerbread. Nice. Perhaps a bit much on the cloves though.

Bottle from Geers. Beautiful red/brown colour, lots of creamy foam. Nose of caramel, chocolate, ripe plums. Light roasty, sweet, notes of spices (anise). Rather bitter finish, bit unbalanced. Not the greatest example for this style but certainly not bad.
