Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Bottle from Magic Room. Moderate caramelly maltiness making the base. Hops seem to be slightly aged already, time taking off the edge. Resiny citrusy zesty profile remains, but slightly too faint and also feeling slightly oxidized. Otherwise nicely drinkable, good.

5.6.2017. Bottle from Magic Room. Soft, subtle, and complex. Med body, high carbonation. Lots of phenolic yeast derived spiciness makes up the bulk of character. Soft silky mouthfeel, well balanced, tasty. Good one. 3.7 Rerate 6.5.2021. Bottle via Beermalade tasting. Medium body, med-high carbonation. Solid honeyish and softly caramelly malty base. Perfumey floral and spicy character, pretty aromatic, but unobtrusive. A bit of applish fruitiness, kinda trippely. Easy drinking, yet nuanced. Previous rating checks out, adjusting points slightly upwards.

Bouteille 33cl, BB 10/26/2017.

Bottle from a Carrefour in Bruges. Pours clear yellow with a small, foamy, white head. Fruity smell. The aroma contains hops, fruits, pine and yeast. Fruity, light sweet onset; medium to heavy bitter. Dry grassy finish, light fizzy carbonation, slick texture. A rather straightforward IPA.
