Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Off white bubbly head stayed on a hazy, still, golden body. Minimal aroma of stewed fruit, sweet grapefruit & malt. Medium to full body. Very smooth with little carbonation. Slightly malty to the fore with sweet citrus, stone fruit & mango & a long bitter back of grapefruit, citrus & pith. Very much an English IPA Style but nevertheless, this is a quality beer & one that is very hard to find in the UK so I’m very pleased to be able to try it.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Banana and cloves aroma - hefe-esque. A cloudy amber. Extremely creamy looking white head. Top marks for appearance - I just want to strip off to my leather chaps and dive straight in. Light bitter, with underlying sweetness. More of the former into the finish. Again I’d liken it to a hefe, with the bananas and cloves but with a noticeable boozeyness. Light bodied. Slick. A prickle of carbonation, but it’s not overly noticeable. Quite an abrupt finish. Enjoyable and refreshing. Understated but in this case it’s a positive.

A dark brown beer, a head is medium and beige. Aroma has strong spicyness, lavender, anise, cinnamon, some caramelly body. Taste has strong (Christmas-)spicyness, flowers, some caramel and dry herbs. No alcohol. Medium bodied. Strongly aromatic and spicy. This is quite unique as the trappist should be.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Albert Heijn Culemborg. Hazy golden with some yeast specks and a white head. Yeasty fruity aroma. Taste and whole experience is very Belgian even though it’s from the U.S.A. Tasty Belgian Ale.

Nice brown black hue, frothy beige head. Roasty dark malt aroma, smoke and leather. Quite balanced. Also the taste. Balance has been well designed, nice dark dried fruits, leather and smoke. Liquorice and also dry figs. Lots of smoke but in a balanced way. Warming and not really disturbing me in any way, only all of the goodness.
