Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Bottle @ home. Slightly unclear yellow to light orange color, average sized off-white head. Aroma is malts, butter. Taste malts, butter, medium bitter. There is some fruity hoppiness in there somewhere but it’s clear that this beer is either way too old or just bad. At least, I don’t like it.

Pours hazy yellow/orange with a frothy, quite quickly diminishing white head. Smells fruity and grassy. The aroma contains malts, hops, grass, herbs and yeast. It tastes light sweet and medium to heavy bitter with a dry finish. Medium body, round mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Excels in its style but could have been better balanced.

Bottle, 75cl. A dense dark beige head forms over a next to black body. Cute lacing. The aroma is rather heavy, with dried fruits, licorice and hints of chocolate. Molasses. It’s full bodied, lightly warming and with a good dash of sweetness. Molasses, coffee, licorice. Pleasant carbonation. Lasting finish. Quite pleasant indeed, although not world class. 161231

Bottle, 75cl corked. A hazy brown beer with some small floaties. Light beige head of moderate size leaving lacing. Rather spiced aroma, with sage it seems. Some caramel, bread and resins. Hints of chocolate. It’s full bodied, lightly warming and pleasantly carbonated. Semi dry. Roasted notes, toffee, bread and sage in the flavor. Lasting spiced finish. A pleasant holiday ale for sure. 161231

Bottle shared at Maakun’s. Little gushy-gushy. Hazy pale amber with thin off white head. Sweet caramel malts, coriander, mint, white raisans, spices. It’s a bit dank and passed its prime I’m affraid. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium body soft carbonation. Still a nice drink.

Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Slight gusher. A bit hazy darker golden with white head. Lots of sweet malts, some oxidized notes with sherry and dried fruits. Fresh apricot, light honey and nuts, some strawberry jam, orange juice. Quite fruity overall with fruity sweetness and a soft grassy bitter finish. Medium bodied with a bit fizzy carbonation.
